RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration says smokers that are trying to quit can safely use nicotine gum, patches and lozenges for longer than previously recommended.

Current labels suggest consumers stop smoking when they begin using the products and that they should stop using them after 12 weeks.

The federal agency said Monday that the makers of gum and other nicotine replacement products can change the labels that say not to smoke when using the products. The FDA also said the companies can let consumers know that they can use the products for longer periods as part of a plan to quit smoking, as long as they are talking to their doctor.

More than 45 million Americans smoke cigarettes and about half try to quit every year.

Here's a followup on this stated FDA position of opening up to the notion that it might take more than 14 days to get over cigarette addiction. FDA Amends NRT Rules - Yahoo! Finance The article indicates that "The FDA is committed to reduction of cigarette smoking in the U.S. with its stronger anti smoking campaigns"

I smoked cigarettes for twenty friggin' years and the only and I mean the only thing that enabled me to quit (16 months utterly cigarette free, by the way), is so-called electronic cigarettes.

Article states that "[...]Philip Morris International (PM) have purchased the patent and global rights to an aerosol nicotine-delivery system. It will develop the aerosol technology into a smokeless product that it says could be less harmful than traditional cigarettes." It will be interesting to see how much Phillip Morris protectionism there will be in the agency's ultimate proclamation.

I'm so glad that they gave us 'permission' to do what we were already trying to do anyway. I think it's ludicrous that they rule that it's 'okay' to use the gum, patches, whatever.. longer, but yet still can't see that for the most part, they don't work. They're lacking one of the biggest habits of this addiction. The hand-mouth habit.

BP and their employees at the FDA ... couldn't care less about anything
other than promoting BP's largely ineffective products.

BP is not in the business of cure anything ...
They are a "Drug Maintenance" business.

If they were in the business of curing anything
they would be in the business of putting themselves out of business.

I don't think nicotine was ever as dangerous as they lead on to be. Improperly handled liquid in high concentrations can be though. As far as gum, cigarettes, cigars, pre-made e-liquid and such, it's not.

This is great news to me. So the FDA says nicotine is not as dangerous are previously thought.

Nicotine gum be dangerous, if a child chewed it, and they make it flavored now, which could be construed as "marketing to children".

Overall, I think a child would most likely chew nic gum before they would e-liquid. Ever try to drink any?

Pre-made e liquid can be dangerous though, if a child drank it.
