Don't be giving them any ideas. I have always thought that after they are done with the smokers it will be on to the obese. As the tax money from cigarette sales goes down (lack of sales), they will have to find other ways to replace that money and obese people will be the next target but it will be for their own good (sarcasm) and for the children (as BigJimW posted).

I am beginning to think no matter what you do if you say "its for the children" then no one must question it or if that doesn't qualify say its to help prevent global warming....then what ever it is its ok, and the greatest idea since slice bread.

Too late. Governor Patterson here in New York recently tried to push for the taxation of items such as regular soda over diet soda. It got a lot of criticism and didn't make much headway, but it just shows that their thinking is already moving in that direction. It might be worthy to note that New York currently has the highest tobacco taxes in the nation as well. WE LOVE TAXES!

I personally wouldn't mind high sales taxes (not for specific items necessarily), but only if they'd eliminate income tax. Taxing us at both ends feels pretty feudal.:-x

Considering the fact that many states are on the verge of tilting over into bankruptcy, is it any surprise that they're looking for new revenue streams? I don't like taxes any more than anyone else, but it's important to remember that your taxes actually buy you stuff like roads, police, fire departments, schools, parks and etc.. That stuff isn't free.

I was on Chantix for an entire year... yes, 12 long months of hell because my dr is an idiot and must have been getting some kind of cut on the price I paid for it... $130 a month plus I was still smoking 8-o Not kidding!! That stuff not only made me feel extremely moody but it made my ears ring very loudly, weight gain, bowel problems, headaches, tingling and numbness throughout my body, high blood sugar... they now say Chantix can cause diabetes and other heart and health problems. Coming off of it was 3 weeks of hell also as it IS addicting or rather 'habit forming'. The worst part is the mood changes... not just .....y but depressed, sometimes overly happy, hyper, just plain weird. I hated that crap... so glad to be off it.
