The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) - the lead federal agency which is in charge of regulating the safety of tobacco products which kill hundreds of thousands of Americans each year - is still not sure that these deadly products are any more hazardous than electronic cigarettes, according to a communication sent out by the FDA.

According to the communication: "There may be a perception that electronic cigarettes...are safer alternatives to conventional tobacco products. ... However, FDA is not aware of any scientific data to support those perceptions."

In other words, the FDA is not sure that cigarette smoking is any more hazardous than using a product (e-cigarettes) which contain absolutely no tobacco, does not burn tobacco, and delivers primarily nicotine and propylene glycol without the thousands upon thousands of chemicals - including more than 40 known carcinogens - that are present in cigarettes.

my comments....

I have been using my e-Cig for a month now.. let me tell you that I can breathe better. I have more energy. I smell better. I smoked for 20 years and was unable to give up cigarettes on any of the other prescribed methods. So I chose to try an unorthodox method and it works for me. I even tried the suicide thought inducing chantix. This has got to be better for me as I am only inhaling Glycerin (USP btw), Nicotine, and flavoring... The act of smoking isn't in and of itself bad... It's the ingredients in traditional cigarettes that are killing people. People need to get off the BAN E-CIG bandwagon. It helped me and I will never stop using mine. They will have to pry it from my cold dead fingers... along with any other freedoms they decide the want to take.

left there for everyone to read.......

Just read and commented. Here are the two cents I left behind:

I also with the help of e-cigarettes quit smoking tobacco cigarettes. Every other cessation method I tried failed me miserably. I did not WANT to smoke anymore and for that matter did not like to smoke anymore. I am only 30 and my years of smoking made me nothing but sick and miserable. Try as I could I kept picking up my disgusting habit because my body was so addicted to it, my mind could not win that battle. Only one week into vaping, the constant coughing, wheezing, and chest pains are gone. My sense of smell has returned and I have not touched a real cigarette or had a desire to since I started using my e-cig. I will never touch a tobacco cigarette again and even if a ban is put into place the corrupt "protectors of our health" will not stop me from vaping. I may still have a nicotine addiction but at least cancer WILL NOT provide me a sure death and I am not harming my loved ones as I am producing no second hand smoke whatsoever. This device has saved my life and it's a total shame that anyone would want to stop the saving of more lives.

OK the negative comments I see are coming from current smokers. As a former smoker I understand where you are coming from. I know that Dr. Speigel is anti-smoking and therefore against you. I believe everyone has the right to make thier own decision as to whether or not they smoke. I decided I wanted to smoke but could not afford the health factors and monetary factors involved; so i dropped tons of money on FDA approved NRTs, non of which worked because I like the act of smoking. Finally I stumbled upon the e-cig for one month I have not had a cigarrette nor a desire to have a cigarrette. I understand you do not want your freedoms taken away please do not push the FDA to take away mine. E-cigs are healthier than toboacco cigs, I hold no belief that they do not have any health effects on me but I know they are significantly less than what I was doing. I am also weaning down the nicotine content further reducing the ill effects of this product. After 15 years of smoking I am smoke free but I always remember where I came from. I respect your right to choose what is right for you please respect my right to do the same.

Don't we have any attorneys in these forums?

This is a historical opportunity for a lawyer or law firm to SUE THE FDA over false and misleading practices in dealing with e-cigs. At best, they might even be able to put the FDA in bed with big tobacco and do some permanent damage to this corrupt agency! At the very least, they could file to get the full data and research released by the FDA via the FOI act. Then, turn around and bring another suit of some sort that will FORCE the FDA to "blow their wad" in court, thereby negating both their argument and regulatory authority over this product!

Don't just leave it to the mfrs to fight the battle. Bring to national attention by taking it all the way to the USSC if possible.

The FDA is just ridiculous. After stupid comments like that how can people in this country even feel safe with anything they regulate.

Don't be silly. You don't know that if you continued smoking you would get cancer from cigarettes. Emphysema or heart disease might have killed you first. :p

If they factor in the number of lives lost to fires accidentally started by cigarettes, maybe they'll believe that e-cigarettes save lives.

I pay income tax, part of which goes, in the form of a federal subsidy, to tobacco farmers. I pay $5.26 per pack in taxes (I live in NYC). I don't think it's paranoia to believe that the government has a stake in my not quitting. When Altria (Philip Morris), Liggett Group, RJ Reynolds and Lorillard decide to start manufacturing and selling e-cigarettes, thereby enabling the government to collect taxes on it, the FDA will see the light.

i think this boils down to money. i bet the cigarette companies are losing billions of dollars from ecigs. do you know if company wants their drug to pass FDA, they need to donate money to the FDA to help speed up the process:mad::mad::mad: and these so-called prescription drugs are worst than the ones you get from the street. the only difference is that the government is getting a cut of the money. who do you think funds this political parties they have??? oil, cigeratte and drug companies:mad::mad::mad::mad: also the government killed the electric car back in the early 90s.

My Comment:

Every opponent to electronic cigarettes can be linked to a handful of vested interests. Including, but not limited to, Johnson and Johnson, Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline. Makers of all those wonderful quit smoking products that have a +/- 95% failure rate if they don't kill you first. Lets not forget that these FDA approved NRT's contain higher levels of carcinogens than electronic cigarettes. It may surprise you to know that these carcinogens a.k.a. N-nitrosamines are contained in many of the foods you eat on a daily basis.
