Possible, yes of course it is. It is a battery so it could possibly explode but, how often has your car, cell phone, laptop, iPod, iPad, cordless phone or flashlight battery exploded? Probably never. That's about how likely your PV battery is to explode too so, relax and vape on. :vapor:

Ditto the above. Practice the same caution and respect with the ecig batteries as you do with your cell phone.

It seems to me that it's within the realm of possibility. But it's probably less likely than a cigarette lighter exploding, and you probably used them for many years without giving it much thought. So as with most health risks, your risk of injury from explosion has probably gone down.

This reminds me of the other fear I have, namely, adulterated e-juice, or poorly mixed juice that would cause an overdose. Again, the risk seems extremely small. (After all, cigarettes could also be adulterated.) However, I've decided that there's an easy solution to this problem. I plan on stocking up on the stuff, so most of it will sit around for weeks before I use it. If there is an unsafe batch released, it would undoubtedly be widely publicized before I got a chance to use mine.

Those are the only two risks I can think of, and viewed in perspective, they seem extremely remote.

I just watched this video about that incident yesterday and it made a lot of sense. Hopefully it helps you a bit.

It's basically what BlueMoods said but with some specific details about the Fire Dept report and statistics about the style of battery involved.

Edit: It's not clear if the video is sharing correctly so here's the youtube URL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgZ0G6y8HF8

Oop, that's fixed it!

Do you worry about your cell phone exploding next to your ear? I'm sure there are a few over the years out there but compare those to the millions of cell phones in use. And even the videos of those show it happening while they're charging or when dropped on a hard surface or left in hot cars for instance. Also when there are problems with PVs, other than improperly made mods/stacked batteries, etc, they don't explode. They melt down while charging due to a glitch in the battery's cut off or the charger's or the safety cap just pops out. Its not like a rocket flies across the room. I understand though and it scared me when I first started too but I stick with reputable companies known for incorporating lots of safety features and I think everyone should until or unless they take the time to learn about properly built mods.

I am almost positive that no disposable electronic cigarette battery has ever vented.
But even if one did, it wouldn't "explode" so much as just kind of fizzle.

Some of the points are very basic in their presentation, but the video is pretty accurate for how it can "explode".
(homemade mod with stacked batteries in an unvented case)

the few cases in the news lately of fires and such from "ecigs" such as ego's burning cars and whatnot are very plainly user error, you shouldnt leave the ego in the car in the first place let alone charging unattended in 100F + air temp.

there have been a few cases of ego's faulting out and it's exact;y what he described, it got very hot, plastic melted and the battery releases gas, no different then the way a cell phone would do it. one guy just tossed it into the front yard and that was that. with an ego class or similar battery you will know instantly from the heat that something is going wrong and i wouldnt be overly worried about using them.

Please do not buy into the fearmongering anti-ecig reports that want you to believe that your battery is likely to explode in your face. The odds are much better that your house will be demonlished by Steam Turbine's meteorite.

It's not "irrational" exactly, it's media fear mongering. Fear sells ads! Yay!

Here's the deal. These are "lithium ion" batteries. The most common rechargeable currently in use. They are everywhere. Cell phones (all of 'em), music players (like the iPod), tablets (iPads, Kindles, Nexus, whatever), laptop computers... pretty much anything you recharge is using lithium ion batteries.

For that matter, if you happen to get an electric car any time soon, that'll be lithium ion too. I think the hybrids use them as well.

If you want, I'll dig up stories about exploding cell phones, laptops catching on fire, the works. Found a great video of a laptop bursting into flames at LAX airport. Very impressive flare.

Lithium ions do not actually "explode". They can overheat which can cause the casing (such as a cell phone or e-cig) to "burst". This can happen dramatically so people refer to it as "explode". Close enough description I guess.

However, consider this:

There are, right now, more activated cell phones in the United States than there are people. And I mean counting babies and toddlers. Why there are that many cell phones, I have no idea. Are people giving them to their dogs now???

So way over 300 million cell phones--all using lithium ion batteries--in the US right now. And when was the last time you heard a story about one exploding? If it happened a lot, the US would be a big ball o' fire right about now. :)

Yes, it is possible for a lithium ion to overheat, burst it's casing, and cause a fire. It is, however, so rare, you should probably worry about, I dunno, meteors or something.

Me? I worry about the way people drive over here. You should see the drivers in Texas. They're scary.

Keep in mind that it is possible that a meteorite the size of a peanut traveling at 200 miles a second can fall on your head at any moment.... Its just not very likely.

I would just like to respectfully point out that the Perseid Meteor shower is occurring this week-end. 8-o

Always a good show though :)

How'd he get his own meteor anyway???
