I'm afraid sub-ohm vaping isn't something I do, so I can't help you on that.

Personally, I wouldn't choose protected batteries for any kind of vaping. IMRs are safe chemistry, and "safer" than protected batteries even if you're running them in a mech. Why? In a catastrophic failure, IMRs will vent with heat and gas - protected batteries will vent with flame. I'm assuming that you're going to be using a mech if you're cloud chasing? Regardless, it is worth mentioning that protected batteries are not suitable for VV/VW devices at all.

Also, do you have a multimeter (or a device with a built-in ohm meter) to check your coils?

Umm, you have no reason to be sub ohm vaping at all at this point. None! As far as what batteries to get for a mechanical mod, you have a lot of options. Protected and unprotected batteries will fire in a mechanical mod. However, the IMR and Hybrid batteries ( like sonys and panasonics on FT) are much safer in cases of damaged cells/venting. They are much less likely to explode\fire and more likely to vent and get really hot if something goes bad.
