Ok, so after weeks reading up on here and watching countless youtube videos. I finally got the Kanthal wire and built my microcoil and vaped on the hyped up kayfun plus. Here is what I came up with, my honest review. First let me say that I must have been very lucky because my first shot I wrapped a pretty good microcoil using 28g 5/64 drill bit and it came out to about 1.2 ohms which I was very happy with and pinched it nice together so it was glowing very very nice from the inside out. I really do think watching all the youtube videos really helped alot, so thanks to the youtube videos. Ok, after that I put the cotton in and put dropped liquid on the cotton and coil so it wouldnt fire without having the cotton moist. Put it on my provari and fired it again, it was smoking pretty nice. Put everything together and filled it up with 24mg of blackberry champagne. Set my provari to about 3.5v which is around 10watts. Now my review :) I did read on here quite a bit of times that there some people here a whistle when you vape and so people dont, I guess I wasnt lucky because this thing whistled so much to the point that it was pretty irritating. At first didnt really like the tast so much, after about 5 hits this thing started to taste like metal. So now Im hearing whistling while im tasting metal. I took everything apart incuding the cotton out of the coil and started to dry burn, even with nothing in it the coil itself almost had a faint smell of metal. Do coils at first taste like metal until the burns off? I have to say even after a few hits, I know now that 24mg is definitely too strong because I did feel a little nauseous after a few hits. Also the air flow just didnt seem right even after adjusting it a few times, I think its going to get used to since it is a little different than using a cartotank or a protank. Now my question to all the great folks on here, did anybody else taste metal when they first got their kayfun or is it a new kanthal wire or just some of the metal I was burning from the kayfun factory, or does anybody else have any ideas why I was tasting metal or a very nasty taste and TWO does the whistle bother anybody else and is there a solution to it. Thanks again for all your replies.

Did you dismantle, wash with dish soap, scrub, then soak the parts in vodka? Did you wash your hands before rolling the cotton?

Looks like part of the issue was that you didn't oxidize the contact coil enough during build. Also, priming the coil and wick with juice then letting it sit for a few mins helps.

How do you oxidize the contact coil during the build? I just did a few dry burns without the cotton. thanks for your help and no I didnt wash scrub, I just rinsed it in water and did not soak the parts in vodka. thank you for your help, I will try soaking and scrubbing the parts, but how do you oxidize the coil during the build?

I do a 9/10 wrap of 28g kanthal over a 5/64 bit as well. before I wrap it on the bit I take the length of wire and either run my micro torch or use my gas stove burner over the wire in the area I'm going to coil. I then let it cool and wrap around the bit as tightly as I can until I get opposing legs at 10 wraps. I then slide out the bit, take my stainless tweazers and pinch the coil tightly without tweaking it, then torch it right at the coil until it glows bright for several seconds. After I'm finished I quickly run the coil under the faucet with the tweazers still holding it. I then slide the drill bit back through the coil and use the bit to situate the coil over the air hole while aligning the posts. Its waaay easier to keep the perfect position with the drill bit. When I think its right, I tighten the posts and use the drill bit to tweak the coil up, down, left or right to get the perfect final position. I then slide out the bit, twist off the excess at the posts and feed the cotton through.

EAsy Peeezy!

Thanks Reeftivo, I appreciate your help. :) I think I needed to clean my kayfun a little better out of the box, maybe Im still tasting some machinery from the factory. Also, wish this darn whistle would go away ha ha. Also, may have to buy some other flavors and definitely drop from 24mg to maybe even 12mg, a few hits and I was nic sick ha ha :)

My pleasure!

I usually nuke some DI water in a cup and drop in whatever new device I have (plastic excluded) and that usually does the trick. anything ceramic I just torch since they will give off a soapy taste. I've read that the whistle may be caused by burrs on the machining in the air channel or at the tip of the adjustment screw. You may want to slide the blunt end of a tiny drill bit through the tube to see of it catches on any burrs. Just a thought! Re; 24mg nic! I too had to drop down to 18 because I was not digging the head spinning-LOL.

Happy Vaping

I just got two kfl+s from intaste.de. One took two days of washing and soaking in hot dawn (dishwashing liquid) to get the machine oil taste out of it :glare: The other cleaned up with just one washing. I would fill a glass with hot dawn and put the parts in it.. then swirl it around.. let it sit, swirl it around.. rinse.. change the water and repeat.. over and over. I evenutally got the machine oil taste out. (finally!)

All of mine whistle sometimes, including the russian 91%...I've found that if I change positions.. meaning that if the air hole is facing down and it's whistling, I can turn it over to where the air hole is facing upwards and it stops whistling. Some builds seem to whistle more than others and some don't whistle at all.. it's never really been that bad or consistent to bother me enough to not use them.

Mine didn't whistle at all, so I am led to believe that it might be leftover burs from the machining like previously stated. The drill-bit thing is a good suggestion. As far as cleaning it before building, it's a good idea to make that a habit with any piece of vape gear that has the ability to send things down your lungs. Let it soak in some hot distilled water for a little bit, then look at the film of stuff at that rose to the surface. Pretty gross.
