OK, So picked up some 28awg Kanthal from my favorite B&M yesterday. Made a few coils, first few crashed and burned, pretty sure I just had them to big and they were touching the sides. The last one works, however I'm only getting 1.2ohms. I did 9 wraps with the 28awg and used organic cotton with a flavor wick. I figured 9 wraps would get me at least closer to 1.7ohms or 1.8ohms. Any thoughts?

Do more wraps. probably closer to 11-12 for a 1.7 resistance.

That's probably gonna be a more than tight fit in a Protank head, with 28 AWG.
A 12 wrap microcoil with an inner diameter of 1.4 mm and 30 AWG Kanthal gives me 2.0 Ohms and fits nicely.
If you're not into micro coils, get some 32 AWG, you'll only need 5 wraps on 3 mm silica to get 2 Ohms there :)

Micro coils is my next adventure. I wanted to learn the basics first. That and I haven't had a chance to go get a butane torch yet.

Probably, it all depends on the diameter of your coil. One thing you need to do, reduce the amount of cotton you are using by at least half, that is way too much. You also need to cut it closer to the coil head.

I don't know, looks fine to Shepherd Book.

:) Yeah, way too much cotton.

You should get some 30g and/or 32g for wrapping standard (non-micro) coils.. When I wrap a standard coil, i usually use 32g.

The diameter you wrap on will also affect your outcome - I always usually wrap on a 1/16inch (1.5875mm) drill bit. For the protank, something between 1.4 and 1.8mm is ideal; any larger than 1.8mm and your mandrel won't be able to fit all the way to the bottom of the slots on the coil.

When I wrap on my 1/16in bit, 6 wraps of 32gauge gets me about 2.0ohms. With 30g, 7 wraps will get me about 1.7ohms.. I think some thinner wire will help you, 28g can work well for microcoils but takes longer to heat up. I use 30g for my microcoils and 32g for my standard coils.
... Oh yeah, and less is more with cotton! It's easy to overdo it, the cotton swells up a lot when it soaks up juice, unlike silica. Your cotton wick should be narrow enough to slide easily through your coil; if it bunches up at all while pulling it through it's too much. Too much cotton will cause the coil to cut off juice flow, but too little and it will flood and gurgle. You need to find the balance

I tried 31awg first, and a 7 wrap on a 5/64 gave me about 2.7Ω for a micro coil. It worked really well, and heated up really fast. 10wraps now with 30awg on a .07 screwdriver gives me 2.3 to 2.4Ω. I kind of liked the performance of the coils I made with the 31awg. The coil is a lot narrower which made it fit into the head easier, and it heated up faster.

I kind of wish I splurged more on a 31awg spool. For some reason, 31 is more expensive than either 30 or 32. I guess this is just because it's an odd size. Seems to be a good middle ground, in my limited kanger coil experience. Unfortunately, I'll have to figure out the best way to get the 30awg to suit my needs, as I bought 50' of it.
