No incentive. No compensation. Give him a mod. He tests and adds to the list.

Then why are the Bay City Vapors mods listed at the very top and others with similar results are buried much farther down? I'd understand it they were ranked by voltage drop, but the order seems random besides the prominence given to the locally made mod.

Great question. I doubt nothing tangible. Do you think the charts are good for comparison when shopping for a new mod?

Slightly, and certainly the comments speak to the build quality and design, like switch pushed to the side or getting warm/hot.

What I see missing in the methodology is just how clean are the contacts and parts of the mod being tested.

What I don't see missing is lots of copper, brass and aluminum... did I mention the brass? :2cool:

I always thought it was in order of testing. Another great question.

That's the problem with doing testing like this. You've got to go out of your way to eliminate any appearance of bias. Even if it was the order of testing the data is obviously being used as an advertising tool by Bay City Vapor.

There's just too much sketchiness going on here for me to take this chart at face value.

FWIW my opinion is that it is a valid test (if being performed unbiasedly), it's a mod test and nothing more. Batteries are always going to be different, even if they are the same battery and brand new, the internal resistance will be slightly different and it likely changes a little every discharge and charge cycle. The same thing goes for attys and coils.

I like the examples of the roller old spring vs new spring, that was a significant change. Anything .15v or less vdrop is acceptable IMO, which seems to be the majority.

This kind of controversy will keep on keeping on....and I will keep on using a good regulated mod :D

What is current loss? Maybe he means potential current that is not being drawn? Unless there is current bypassing the coil or someone has changed the laws of physics there can not be current lost. In a single path circuit current must be the same at any point along that circuit.

Ok, just for clarification on the tests, many of the mods that were tested were:

Brand new or near new with minimal use.
Many of the mods tested belong to me personally.
Jon is 100% unbiased and plays no favorites, he is in no way affiliated with anyone or any vape related company. He does photography professionally. He receives no compensation or kickback from any mod maker. He is 100% independent. Many mods consumers bring him, some are sent to him by mod makers and sent back once testing is done.
I was present during many of the tests. Many mods were tested multiple times (pin adjustments, unusually low or varied readings) until results were somewhat repeatable.
All mods were tested with the same power supply and methodology.

The BCV mod was being talked about long before it was actually available. Jon was on a preorder list for the first batch and inserted the BCV XXIX & Surfrider cells with "coming soon" inserted long before he got a mod to test. (Reason why it's at the top of chart)
Prior to the BCV copper mod, the Atmomixani Navel Brass has the best results.

There have been many other folks witness the tests as they were being conducted.

I'll play Devils advocate. For those who might question the integrity, honor and methodology of the results - and those who's efforts have produced them. I have no stake, no interest, no bias. I speak only what my perceptions are.

I've been following Jon's testing for a few months now (one of the reasons I joined calivapers), and although I approached the testing with my usual skepticism, I have to say, he's stuck at it, and his methodology is quite consistent - sufficient for me to not question his results with a perception of bias on his part.
Yes, he does put some effort into obtaining consistent, repeatable results, which may actually improve performance for some mechs... but, the goal is not a better score, only repeatability.

His obvious goal, for anyone that would take the time to read the entire thread on CV, is to establish a format that allows the observer to compare, as has been stated - the quality of continuity as derived from the quality of design, construction and materials used - of mechanical mods. The battery and atty are purposely taken out of the equation because they are not a repeatable source of either power supply or resistance.

Certainly, some things stand out... the surprisingly (at least to me) good Sigelei 8W, the less than stellar GGTS... but as to be expected, most decent mechs fall into the sub 0.2v loss category and those perceived to be "better than decent" quality, the sub 0.10v range. This is actually a good thing for two reasons.

1. The assumptions we make as consumers about the quality of high end mechs are, for the most part, justified. Is the substantial added cost, for an additional 0.05v improvement worth it? I'm not the one to determine that.
What you prefer to spend your money on is your business. I don't ask your opinion about Timex vs. Ulysse Nardin... don't ask mine about how much you choose to spend on vaping gear.

2. The quality of even budget mechs, as regards voltage drop is, again surprisingly, quite good. When you consider that only a few short years ago, anything with a less than 0.5v drop would have been acceptable and less than 0.3v stellar... now, we as informed consumers won't stand for mediocrity. We've demanded better... and low and behold, we've got better.

Although I'm not picking on you, I will use your comments as example to others. That's an uninformed and cynical thing to say... but then cynicism is the order of the day in a world where being ripped off and lied to is so common place. The "ONI debacle" comes to mind.
Some of the folks at CV are dead serious about the performance of their mechs. Pokerplayer for example... He's not what you'd call a "serial braggart", and much of what he has is an unknown - but I cannot even begin to imagine what sort of premium collection he may have. I'd wager it might exceed that of any two or three members that have posted here.
Sure, he may have expectations for his personal favorites, but fudge the numbers to support any bias? I seriously doubt a lack of integrity on his part... and at least equal to that of Jon's interest in an unbiased report.

I've said my mind. I suggest before anyone else come in and join the crowd, they spend an hour reading every single post in the "jkuro" thread... and decide for yourself the value of his work.

Cheers

Well, if nothing else it's because people here by and large aren't building mods where the body conducts current, and many if not most of the actives are not building unregulated anyway. So this discussion is rendered rather uninteresting.

Awesome James...
note the date on the OP folks, that forum member jkuro who does this awesome service for vapers where sub ohms and v drop is the name of the game had his list going long before these BCV pinless mechs came out. I've been using it to make my purchase decisions.
Jame's pinless copper mod is innovative.
-and the zero v drop is for a 1.04 Ohms. the second column is for a .52 load... yep this is the NB Brass Neme killer.
So is the Alumi-neme but hold on...

looks like the Oros beat out .004 that the XXIX came in at with .52 load.
.002 ohms v drop! that's thousandths!!!

fyi the brass FT Neme comes out at .03 drop with the .52 ohms load!

I see there is a Fusion hybrid connector that uses the same "pinless" design that BCV does...

you all know we were headed in this direction no?

thanks for the awesome mod James!

I hope the table below is legible, as you can see copper has a conductivity index of 62.1 vs 1.32 for the best stainless steel T-316 which some people call "surgical grade" so its no surprise that the voltage drop of a mod made entirely of copper including the caps, pins etc its going to be as close as 0 as it can be compared to most mods that have parts made of steel, aluminum and other metals Metal Conductivity.jpg
