First Build: Resistance Lower Than Expected

I just got my first rba, the EHPro kayfun Lite Plus V2, and tried my first build using the included 32 awg Kanthal and 3mm silica. I folded over the silica once and did a 6/7 wrap right on the wick. Now, I can only guess at the coil diameter, but it looks to be about 1/16th. I was expecting that to read around 1.8 ohms, but both my ohm meter and ipv box mod are showing 0.9. Am I doing something wrong here?

The diameter of the coil, as well as the overall length of the wire, can greatly affect the overall resistance of the coil. You'll get more consistant results if you wrap your coils around the same drill bit or precision screwdriver as opposed to wrapping coils around silica. I use a 2 mm screwdriver from a precision screwdriver set.

I also recommend making microcoils (loops are compressed together). I use this handy Coil Toy Calculator to help me know how many loops to use for the wire gauge, diameter of coil, spacing of the loops, type of coil, and target resistance. Just fill in the variables and click in the wraps window. A graphic of the finished coil will appear.

I suggest getting some organic cotton (CVS Pharmacy) as opposed to using silica, which can mute flavor IMHO. I have a list of tools and supplies in this link and where to get them.

Thanks everyone! I think I was just too tight around the wick, so I scrapped that build and started over. Wrapped 28ga around a 3/32 drill bit, ended up around 1.4ohms. Then I threaded some 2mm ekowool through it. Yes, now the wick is too loose in the coil (although the performance is much better than the last try), so next I'll try AzPlumber's suggestion of wrapping around the wick itself with a paper clip. I have some sterile cotton too, which I'll definitely attempt, I'm going to try everything and see what works for me. Baby steps!

Yep, Silica is tough to thread into a coil and get the proper fit. It is the only wick material that I wrap my coils around. Most other wick materials are pretty easy to thread through a coil.

Looks like you're on the right track... the experimentation is my favorite part of vaping now... between gear and juice, you'll never get bored!
