Hi folks. I just made my own juice for the first time and I have some comments and questions...

I just received my PG/VG/VGnic, all totalling 5L. I mixed it all together to get 20 mg/ml, 60%PG/40%VG. I will eventually dilute this. I've been vaping it for 2 days now, non flavored, and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised at how smooth it is.

I think flavourless was the right choice because I had spent a long time looking for flavors that I don't dislike and it's not easy. I was afraid that the flavourless would have that same mild chemical flavour that a lot of juices have because I thought that that was just the taste of PG/VG/nic. But I was wrong - I think maybe that taste was just something I was picking up from the flavouring.. Anyway, at $200 for 5L of 20 juice I am very happy.

But I'm curious, does anyone make their own flavoring from natural ingredients, or have any technics for infusing natural flavours?

How long do you think the juice will last?

Thanks!

at 10 ML per day you have 500 days of juice supply.

From what I have read, extracting natural flavors without knowing exactly what you are doing, is not recommended. There is a reason many flavorings are "artificial" Some extracts can actually be harmful or downright toxic. If you must try to do this, there is a section for natural extracted tobacco flavors on here. That might give you some pointers on how to proceed. To me, flavorings are too cheap to try this.

yes, I had thought about that. One idea would just be to put fresh mint leaves into the juice and let it sit - but you never know (without researching) if you can just up and vape whatever comes out of that. On the other hand, people "vaporize" all kinds of things these days using those solid vaporizers. I really am liking the flavorless anyway...

I realize it's a lot of juice. I am actually splitting it with a buddy. at 20 strength, I could never come close to vaping 10 ml in one day! I'm amazed at the markup on the vape shop juices.. even to get flavorless is the same price where I go. It's about $20 for 30 ml. at $200 for 5000 ml, that same $20 gets me 500 ml of juice!

I don't have any info on making your own flavoring, I just wanted to say that I also just got into DIY and really enjoy unflavored or very lightly flavored juice. Unflavored can be used to tame overly flavored commercial juice too. I don't dig the super sweet stuff so I love having the control to leave out the sweetener.

I'm a noob here so pls excuse my inability to use the quotes..

I started at 24 also, and worked my way down to 12.. I made 20 this time because the guy i split the cost with is currently on 24.. So 20 was a compromise.. looks like i'm going to have this stuff for a while so at some point i'll get more PG/VG to tone it down a bit.. But being an addict and all i can't say i really mind the increase :eek:P 20 is tops though because 24 just gives me hiccups lol

DIY is the smart way to go especially considering where retail juice prices might be a year or two from now. Stockpiling liquid nic is also -highly- recommended while it's inexpensive and readily available. I buy PG, VG and 100mg liquid nic in bulk and only when on sale which allows me to use high quality ingredients at a minimal cost. Purchased in this manner I can mix a liter of 20mg unflavored for around $13. Since I chose to stockpile, that price is "locked in" regardless of what impact the FDA (or state government) has on future costs/availability.

I've been making hybrid-NETs (naturally extracted tobacco infused with secondary flavorings) for years and vape them exclusively. Infusing natural flavor into juice comes at a price, it's -much- harder on wicks and coils than most synthetic flavorings, therefor the use of RBAs is highly recommended. Not all natural flavors translate well into vaping, the process of being heated into a vapor can damage or destroy the taste of many natural flavors. Naturally occurring sugars are a -major- issue, they clog wicks and scorch on coils yielding a burnt taste. Wood (like barrel aging), tea, mint, coffee and many other things can be used to infuse flavor into a juice. Unlike tobacco, for many flavors it's often easier/better to seek out/use a synthetic version. I flavor my NETs with secondary flavorings (like caramel, vanilla, rum etc..) but normally use the same synthetic flavorings for this purpose as most people do for DIY. For most flavors (but not all) synthetics provide a more "accurate" representation of taste when heated into vapor and inhaled, tobacco is one of the few exceptions.

If you want to learn how to extract/infuse flavor into a juice I'd suggest browsing this sub-forum Liquid Extraction From Tobacco it's mainly about tobacco but could give you some ideas on how to extract other flavors for use in vaping/juice.

I'm in Canada. It looks like our government may take a more measured approach. But only time will tell and we can only hope. I think (and hope) they're going to regulate it only for safety/quality control, and not as a form of extending the bullying of smokers to vapers. But there are a lot of people who don't want us all to escape from their shaming, so public pressure could influence them in the wrong direction.

I'm worried about storage though.. I can't keep mine in the freezer.. So i have this batch of a few litres of juice but i don't think it will last long enough to vape it all! :p
Since you don't have the option of putting it in a freezer you can extend its life by storing it in blue or amber glass (or if all you have is clear glass, wrap it in something to keep the light out) and storing it in the coolest darkest place you have. Constantly opening the bottle it is stored in will also shorten its shelf life. Heat, light and air will speed up oxidation of the nicotine so protecting it from all 3 will keep it fresh longer.
If you have it in large bottles right now and If it were me I would transfer a 1 or 2 week supply of it to a smaller bottle. That way you would only be opening the large bottle once every 1 or 2 weeks instead of every time you need to refill your topper.

Actually if it were me doing it I personally would transfer the whole liter bottle to 60 or 120ml bottles. That way I could prevent air from getting to my mix thus keeping it fresher.

I'm no flavoring expert but my impression is most flavoring problems come from using way way too much of it. I use 1-1.5% of a cappella all-in-one flavor and it's fine. Since I add very little I don't burn out on it. Try adding a tiny amount of some promising flavoring to your unflavored DIY and see what happens. Add so little at first that it's hard to detect. What happens is your palette adapts, learns how to find the flavor.
