I started working on my first mod and I'm not sure what's going on with this thing. I soldered the wires to the battery connector and tested it... All looked good 5.05v straight from the battery and 5.04v from the connector. So I decided to throw a carto on to give it a quick try before I solder all the other connections and I get next to no vapor. Carto is still working fine on my ego battery... Any help?

Is it making any sound to indicated there is current, like a sizzle in the atty? From what I understand most attys require air flow to produce the vapor. Did you try having a suck on it to draw the air through the atty hole? By the way i am a newbie so if this sounds stupid just disregard it. Good luck with getting it going.

Nimh batteries work fine for our uses...I run a vv mod on AA nimh and it works great...yo may want to check all your connections to make sure...and the soldering DOES make a difference...just get some desolder wick so if you need to redo some connections later you can remove the solder easily...and Happy modding ....

as for those who believe NIMH batteries do not work for our uses ...see The Puck...if AAA bats will work so will AA....the only REAL sticking point on NiMH vs Li-ion is size/weight vs safety IMHO...

Yeah... I've had crappy NiMH batteries. They make Hybrid ones that hold a charge longer... wonder of they put out amps better. Anyway... there seems to be a lot of variability in NiMH quality.

What amp is the button? What ohms is the atty/carto? Of course, check for shorts as suggested by everyone above.

Ni-MH batts are notorious for low current output, it'll show 5V but won't be putting out enough current to fire the atty. That's the main reason Li-Ion is used, their high current with a steady discharge rate and voltage, and usually have a much longer life span.
That is correct, they just ain't got what it takes.

The Puck was built around a high ohm 901. There were more than a few posts in the Puck thread with folks using 510s and only getting around ~3.6 loaded volts.

Had to do a quick test.

Here's 4 AA 2500mAh NiHMs fully charged at 5.5 unloaded volts with a 2Ω load.

In an actual mod the voltage would actually be lower with it's additional resistance. That's one hell of a drop under load, about 32%. It's quite obvious that their discharge rate, and ability to provide current for our uses is quite poor as BardicDruid noted.

For a comparison here's a AW2600 Li-Ion with a Joye 510 (2.1Ω). The test is by tonyfalcon.

In this case the Li-Ion's drop under load is only about 8%.

I had read alot about nimh working fine. That's why I was trying this. It turns out though, that some of the nimh battery packs have lower discharge than your standard batteries. So some(like the one I tried at first) FAIL! I put in 4 Eveready AAA and it is an absolute smoke..well vape.. demon.
I'm getting as much from a 2-3 second puff as a 7-9 second puff on my ego.

Just my 2 cents:
A lot of mods have had problems with the insulator in the atty connector shorting out when the atty is screwed on.
It is a dang hard problem to find because the thing will test just fine without the atty .

I noticed that problem right off the bat. That little insulator was a pain in the... I ended up using a piece of electrical tape very carefully to reinforce the insulation.

I agree not all NiMh batteries are created equal...and most store bought ones can't hack it...but I also don't want to get caught up in a sidetracked discussion about whose batt is bigger and badder...mine work for my purposes and under the correct conditions most will for others, you have to take into account they are not Li-Ion and as such a lower energy density require more units to provide equal power...

On the other hand my point is lets help the OP figure out his problem rather that muddle over an OLD argument...

No interest in snubbing you WillyB I have watched for and read all your threads and posts with relish due to your penchant for providing EXCELLENT data to the table...many simply toss out pics and say hey here's a mod hope ya like it aint it pretty...I am guilty of that but then again in my case its due to lack of the ability to put thought to text very well...at least where tech is concerned...

So after a little side trip hey Bardolf has anything said here helped yet...BTW I will acknowledge AAA batt packs are definitely not the way to go...I made a 3AAA flashlight into a mod and the batts worked for a bit but it eventually killed the batts(they died and would not recharge after 2 weeks) I use AA nimh and one set of NiZN AA batts in my mods and so far they haven't died yet but that does make for MUCH bigger mods...and also none of my batts are higher than 1800mah... they have a lower internal resistance than the 2500mah and a higher C rating...the 600 mah sounds like a lower internal resistance type since I have seen 900mah AAA batts so you might get enough for an atty with those but a charge won't last long nor will the batteries last under such high load conditions...

but since you said you will be replacing the pack with 10440s I chose to forgo the warning about that in my first post.....

 didnt read the second to last post well enough...Good Deal Glad it works for ya Bardolf...Vape on Bro.....:vapor:
