First Post - Need Some DYI Advice

Hello Everyone!

I'm still kinda new to vaping, and my goal is to reduce, or eliminate, cigarette smoking from my life. I'm a bit of a tobacco connoisseur, and love good tobacco. I normally smoke Peter Stokebbye's Amsterdam Shag for cigarette tobacco, and maduro cigars. I mention this because I've not found a completely satisfying strength of commercially available e-juice, possibly because I'm used to much higher levels of nicotine in the tobacco I smoke. I have a decent, adjustable battery, and get plenty of vapor out of it, so I don't believe that is the problem.
My last purchase from Mt. Baker was, I thought, 36 mg/ml. But upon speaking with them, I discovered that they take 36 mg/ml base, and add nicotine-free flavoring to that. Naturally, one gets a more dilute final product, though to what degree, they were unable to specify. Even so, they have discontinued selling flavored 36 mg/ml juice, and only offer unflavored 36 mg/ml juice. If you want flavors, you must purchase and add them separately.
I began looking for another option, and found 100 mg/ml VG base. This seems a good solution, since I could make some actual 36 mg/ml juice, and see if that does the trick. If not, I could increase the strength.
I know that the first impulse of some will be to warn me about the handling dangers involved, so let me assure everyone that I have hazmat training, and that handling hazardous materials is in fact what I do for a living - just on a larger scale.

Here are my questions:

I would prefer 100% VG, but some of the reading I've done makes it sound as if some PG must be used. Is this true? If so, why?

Some of the reading I've done seems to imply that "freshness" or storage can be an issue with these 100 mg/ml solutions. Some sites have implied that their solution doesn't "break down" as easily or quickly as other vendors' products. Is there anything to this?

Looking at this calculator, (sorry, I'm not allowed to post links), it seems as though you must mix three items to make your own juice - nicotine base, plain VG or PG base, and flavoring. Am I mistaken, or are there pre-flavored, nicotine-free bases to which one only need add nicotine base? You can order 0% nicotine juice. Couldn't you simply make a solution of 100 mg/ml base with 0% e-juice, to get your desired strength? Or would the flavoring then be too dilute?
Any advice you might have will be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

Lots of questions i will try to answer all.

PG is not a requirement, lots of folks use PG free liquids. VG is very thick so for most equipment so it must be thinned to wick properly, some use PGA (pure grain alcohol) and some use DW (distilled water).

If you start with a 100mg nic base it must be diluted to your nic level, this is accomplished with PGA, DW, Flavoring, PG & VG. You don't have to use all of them just use the appropriate one/s for your desired outcome.

Most flavoring are in a PG base but they can be found in VG or PGA also.

Nic base In small amounts can just be kept in a cool dark place for ready mixing. Long term storage is recommended in glass bottles in the freezer with very little headspace in the bottle.

Amoret is correct that is a great place to start reading. But a quick answer is that yes you can do 100% VG. You are also right that there will be a min of 3 products, your nic (if you want all vg then be sure to order it as a vg base), then you will have your carrier (for you that will be just VG), then your flavor harder to find VG flavoring but it is out there.
