First RBA Question: Big Drag = Burnt Taste?

I've built this Genesis rba many times now, and every build I'm getting good taste with small-medium drags but if I take a long drag, I get a burned taste. Different set ups I've tried:

  • I use 28g kanthal wire for all builds, have tried 4/3 and 5/4 wraps with the following wicks:
    • 500 SS wick
    • cotton wick
    • 2mm silica wick
I have:

  • oxidized the SS wick;
  • tried oxidizing kanthal wire as well as not oxidizing it;
  • ensured there are no hot spots (dry fire coil and pulse, kanthal glows all red)
  • coil is wrapped snuggly around wick (not too tight but all parts of coil are touching the wick)
  • wick is saturated with juice (waited the night for wick to saturate itself standing in tank)

But to no avail, as whenever I take a long drag or chain vape 2 or 3 times I get a burnt taste right away. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

It has been my experience that gennies cannot wick fast enough for big drags or chain vaping and so I have given up on them and switched to the kayfun lite+ (tobeco clone - no logo). Mainly due to ease of build, adjustable airflow, perfect wicking, and NO leaking when laid on its side

Are you tipping the tank after a drag to saturate the top part of the wick?
I have tried this but 1) was told this shouldn't be necessary, and 2) sometimes I only take 1 long first drag (the wick is already very saturated at this point) and I still get a burnt taste.

I wasn't aware big drags/chain vaping would be a problem with genny RBAs - initially I was considering a kayfun except the price kind of threw me off. Now I might consider it if I can't get these RBAs to work to my satisfaction :/

actually the tipping is done while taking a drag to keep the wick wet while it fires, this is usually only needed at lowohms/high power and not really an issue on a regulated mod.

there is a point where "snug on the wick" becomes too tight, in the case of mesh too much mesh or rolled too tight and things like cotton and silica too tight in the wickhole and the coil too tightly wrapped.

it helps to know what mod/resistance power you are using. a pic could help as well.

watching several reviewer you can see they have no issues with big hits and chain vapes. but they also hold it like a cigar to keep the juice flowing fast enough.

I run .7-.8 ohms in my genis on a mech and it takes a bit of wick tuning to make sure they function properly, i will say this is probably the only down side, until you do find the optimal setup there is a lot of tuning and fiddling. you can't just toss a wick in and go right off the bat. to make it worse not every setup will work in every geni.

with a mesh wick try keeping it tilted while firing it as many times a low res coil just heats up faster then the wick can compensate. but I can chain vape my genis until the cap is too hot to touch lol

when i got my first ones i built them for my provari and didnt understand why everyone says to tilt them at 1.5 ohms i could hold the button until the tank ran dry standing on the desk.
it wasnt until i got my first mechanical i saw the problem with how fast and hot the coil can glow.
