Hello All,

I'm so glad to have found such a nice forum. I've learned quite a bit over the last week of browsing around. I just received my Riva 510 SE today. It is my first e cig. I'd never even tried one until today. I think I was expecting to puff away a few times just like I do with analogs but one drag gave me such an insane head rush and I didn't want to give it another go for at least an hour. I was using 18mg nicotine. Luckily I also have a supply of 12mg. I'm used to smoking anywhere from 10-15 smokes a day so was surprised by this.

I'm curious, when you pick up your ecig, do you just take one puff and put it down for awhile or do you have a few goes before stopping?

I have another question that is more suited to the Health Forum but I'm too new to post there. Have you all avoided the dreaded weight gain when quitting analogs because you have kept up with your nicotine consumption? I always pack on a few pounds when I've quit in the past and am hoping to avoid it this time around.

I'm glad you got some 12mg too.

Did you remember to blow out your atomizer first? Some folks have that reaction when they accidentally get a lungful of the packing primer that they ship the atomizer with.

Also, don't forget, you can't drag hard on it like a cigarette, just take a nice airy drag off it, nice and soft and easy, that's the way to vape.

Personally, when I vape, I take 4-5 puffs and put it down. I probably do it every 15 minutes when I'm just sitting around on the computer or whatnot, but sometimes I go hours between vapes - in the beginning I just vaped all day, all day, all day (maybe my nic level was too low, now that I think about it).

As for weight gain, it doesn't tend to effect people the same as quitting cold turkey does. You'll be satisfied, so no need to turn to food for satisfaction. Some people end up losing weight because the dessert flavors are so yummy that they can take the place of real dessert, others do gain weight but it's more rare (at least I think it is... let me check).

I smoked ultra lights, then started on my previous PV with 6mg cartos. Never really felt the rush at all. Just started using my eGo with 18 or 24 mg and definitely feel it, a little too much with the 24 really. I did gain a little weight upon that first switch over probably because the nic was too low. Now I really don't have the snack cravings at night like I did.
As far as how often I vape now, I find myself wanting to during the day once in awhile because I like the taste and feeling so much, but when I'm home, I pick it up and drag once or twice and put it down, and do the same every so often. Since the nic is higher I don't really chain vape.

I didn't know this. I have indeed been taking hard drags. I'll lighten up. Thanks for the tip. I've had a few drags of my 12mg Cafe Mocha flavor and have avoided the head rush but it's pretty rough on my throat.

Welcome! It sounds like 18 might be a bit strong for you, so hopefully 12 will do the trick. You may want to get some 0mg juice of the same flavor so you can cut the nicotine level down - you can also mix plain USP-grade PG or VG with your juice to do the same, but you will also lose flavor.

From what I have read since I've been here, the majority of folks don't see much weight change. I have seen some cases both ways, though - one gal said she lost 40 lbs., as the flavors kept her from snacking. Mine didn't really change much until the last couple few months - I've put on about 8 lbs., but that was actually a good thing. I look back at pics from when I was smoking, and looked sickly thin.

Hi Lucille, and welcome to ECF! :)

On my first day of vaping I spent a little while just a tad light headed. I don't know how much of that was nicotine vs. how much was excitement, LOL. But, I smoked a fairly mild cigarette (for 35 years), and vape 30-36 mg juice all day long now. From my observation, and observations from lots of other folks on ECF, there doesn't seem to be a strict relationship between your cigarette consumption and the level of nicotine which will work for you in vaping. It isn't absorbed the same, more slowly. I suspect the amount absorbed by your body depends on a number of factors, including the way you vape.

But, before you come to the conclusion that 18mg is too stout for you, I'd suggest you get beyond the initial hit.

I have gained 10 pounds over 13 months. :( Need to work on that, I wasn't skinny before. Not pleased, but I'm not sure I can blame it on getting off cigarettes (probably not).

I tend to get distracted when vaping and vape an entire cart dry in one sitting... I have yet to find a battery that can keep up with me.

Recently I have been using 6v with a carto and found that I can take short (1-2 second) drags, like an analog, and this has helped me not go through batteries so fast.

As for weight gain, lol, I'm a fat guy so I can never tell if I gained or not! =P

Thanks for the kind welcome everyone!

I have never increased my eating when I've quit smoking, my metabolism has just slowed down after a few months. I had thought that the nicotine would continue to keep my metabolism high. Here's hoping!

I'm going to stick with 12mg through tonight and then try the 18mg if I'm jonesing tomorrow.

Has anyone seen an orange flavored juice? I really like citrus and haven't come across any yet. I'm not to keen on this coffee flavor.

My vape is rarely far from my hand.

I've thought about making myself put it away and use it like you would use a regular cigarette.

But I miss it so. :)

The result is I vape a lot more than I smoked. You'll find that to be a common theme here.

About 10 pounds has found its way onto my frame. I don't know where it came from. I think something in cigarettes is an effective appetite suppressant. To combat that, I have started working out seriously.

Congratulations on making the big switch. It's good to have a variety of juice strengths.

at least having given up analogs you should have the additional energy/stamina to keep up with the new workouts. lol.

Where in NorCal are you from? I grew up around Marysville/Chico.

I find myself vaping a lot more than I smoked (same as OP, 8-15 analogs per day), and so I'm also getting more nicotine. I've also been lightly dieting (1400-1700 cal/day). I started feeling sick yesterday and felt dizzy and weak all day. Turns out I dropped 3.6 lbs in the past 5 days since I started constantly chain vaping all the new juice I got in to celebrate switching completely to my PV. Gotta watch the nic intake and how it affects your metabolism.

In my case I also vaping much more than I used to smoke. I had my self imposed ban on smoking inside the house and car. Not to mention work, smoking is not allowed by law. Now I really enjoy listening to my headphones gear and sipping on good scotch without interrupting my session for quick puff outside, same goes for watching TV - I actually watch it more now - certainly my GF appreciates it as she is a TV addict - so we somehow spend more time together :)

But the best thing is to be able to vape while driving - couple of times a month I had to make a 5 hour drive to our other company office - most of the time on highway with not many places to pull over and have quick .... Much better now, get car in cruise control, crank on favorite music and vape. No road rage anymore...

Cheers, happy vaping everyone.

I'm vaping constantly as well, except when I'm on campus working in the lab 3 days a week where I tend to slip back into my smoking on these days. As for the weight gain, I think it's not just the chemicals in cigarettes part of gaining weight after has to do with the whole oral ritual thing.

I don't doubt there are some metabolism changes as well but keep in mind if you gain 10 lbs over the first 12 months after quitting that only equates to eating ~100 more calories a day or burning ~100 less calories a day or some combination of the two. That's only, for example, an extra 8 oz serving of coke a day.

I just hope I don't gain weight like I did last time I quit: 50 lbs in first 4 months.

Hello Lucille! Welcome from a new vaper, I'm about a week into this myself. Just wanted to reply on the orange flavor. I'm vaping a wonderful juice called Mountain Rift from GotVapes, definitely heavy on the orange essenece, & light citrusy overall- very tasty I think. They also have an orange pinapple that I haven't tried, but am looking forward to trying in the future. Enjoy yourself :)
