Hi,
I've been a pack a day smoker for about 15 years now, and I've been looking into quitting. I'm hoping vaping will help.
I received my joye 510 kit last night. I ordered 30ml 26mg of pg liquid with it. It has the YNDK logo on the cap.
I wasn't sure what to expect. It is very hard on the throat going down. Is it supposed to be this harsh? I would have expected it to go down a lot smoother than a real cigarette. I vaped for about an hour last night. I woke up this morning with chest pains. (You know the kind you get after a night of partying and a lot of smoking.)
I'm just wondering if vaping just takes some getting used to? Will the sore throat and morning chest pain eventually go away?

I also have a specific question for people who have quit smoking and went directly to e cigarettes (cold turkey).
I tried quitting smoking cold turkey last year, and eventually got to controlling the cravings, but my body did some pretty weird stuff. First of all, I became constipated. I would only be able to do my business every 3-4 days, as opposed to my usual every morning time. It was very uncomfortable. I also had really bad insomnia. I was only able to sleep 4-5 hours a night if I do sleep that night. I started a new job and had to fix my sleeping schedule so I started smoking once a night. Needless to say, I was back to a pack a day within a few days.
My question is, did you guys experience these symptoms from going directly to vaping from real smoking?

I apologize for being so ignorant, but I would very much appreciate some advice. I do not want to give up vaping so early, as I have read so much great things about how it can really help someone to quit smoking.
Thank you,

It took me about 2 weeks to fully get used to vaping - the PV is a humectent - meaning it draws water into itself, out of any available source (such as your throat tissues) and certainly drier than tobacco smoke, which have additives to make the smoke smoother and less irritating.

During those initial 2 weeks, I did have a minor sore throat...like snoopy above said, drink plenty of water to compensate for the drying effect of the vapor.

Remember, too, that your body is in a cleansing mode if you're not smoking analogs - you've got a lot of tars and residues in your tissues from smoking for 15 years that your body is now trying to flush from your system.

Hang tough, and let your body re-set itself. Vaping will get more comfortable very quickly.

A few people have mentioned sleep disturbances and find smoking low or zero nic before bedtime helps with that (see the health and vaping section of the forum).
Its possible that with smoking quitting cold turkey your system just goes into shock - my brother gave up this way and he's a jnr doc (tho not in specialty for chest or respiration) and he's convinced thats the case at least tmeporarily. Cold turkey quitting is hard - I couldn't do it lol
You may also want to experiment with nic strengths - its possible the one you have is simply too strong for you; its easy to over (or under) estimate the amount that is right for YOU. Sometimes it requires some experimentation.

Yes! - drink plenty of water - it will dry your throat out! I quit (cold turkey) a little over a week ago and it does take some trial and error.

I was only about a pack (or less) a day smoker for almost 25 years and I am still getting used to it. The only thing I can say is ...... this is so much better than smoking. The taste is great and the nic level is controlled by you. I am not missing the tar or smoke (and smell) at all.

There is a lot of info here - so do some more research and keep going. It will get better.

..... not to mention - the support you receive here is unbelievable!

Good luck.

I just passed my one week mark. I got my first e-cig last Friday. I ran out of analogs on Sunday morning and decided to see if I could just use the e-cig. I did crave a real smoke a bit but a few pulls on the e-cig cured that. I think the motions of the e-cig really helped. Monday morning was a ...... My throat was so dry I must have drank a gallon of water. I had one analog at work that day but used the e-cig almost constant. I'm sure I wasn't getting enough nic as I felt like crap. It basically felt like I had a bad head cold. That lasted until Thursday. All my bodily functions where all out of wake during that time. It was Wednesday night when I got my shipment of juice that included a 18mg and 24mg. The 24mg really helped and Thursday I was doing better. Yesterday (Friday and my one week anniversary) I got my 402 kit and more juice. Vaped like a mad man that night and most of today. The amount of vapor it produced over my first e-cig is night and day. I don't crave analogs at the moment and I'm certain that if I do I can over come it with out having to give in. But over all things are going back to normal and my head doesn't feel like its in a pea soup fog from the withdrawal. My throat is still as dry as the Sierra but mints, gum and lots of water/coffee help.

I really do have to say that I wouldn't have been able to give up analogs with out the e-cig. The nic gum/inhaler/lozenges just don't cut it. Who do we have to bribe at health Canada to make these thing legal?

Hi gixer and congrats! Somewhere on ECF there is a forum that lists a bunch of common possible/reported health effects of vaping. I suggest you check it out. There's nothing too scary in there, but I recognized some of them.

The throat hit shouldn't be that harsh, although some juices vary. If you end up with a juice leak, that could account for some of the harshness. I find that I have to clean my gear once a day - wipe off leaks, let my atty drain overnight, etc. Another thought: if your atty is burning the batting in your cart (the stuff that holds the juice), you'd get some nasty throat hits.

I hope everything gets sorted out for you. Good luck!

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I have some good news. Vaped for a good part of the day yesterday, and it's gotten much better. The harshness of the throat is not so bad anymore. I woke up this morning, and the tightness of the chest is still there, but not as bad, and the sore throat has definitely decreased. I would expect that in a few days I will be a lot more comfortable with vaping.

Just wondering if the foam part in the cart is supposed to be touching the atomizer? Mine looks like it is touching. Is this normal or should I push it further in?

I would have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised with the effect of the e cigarette. I was honestly expecting a placebo effect, but yesterday I found out that it definitely does keep the cravings to a minimum. I think I might just try putting down the real cigarettes pretty soon for good.
Thanks again,
Michael
