Curious if someone could explain to me on why my hv 510 Atty is fizzling after i release button...I initially thought the button on my mod was getting stuck, but this wasn't the case- is this the sign of a failing atomizer? I'm getting between 7-10 days out of an atomizer, I'm thinking I'm doing something wrong ;(

Hey Gregory,
There could be a number of possible things happening here. You said that you go through an atomizer roughly 7-10 days? Normally an electronic based device, will let off of the current instead of just cutting the power off like mechanical. It is a safety feature as that's how an atomizer is supposed to be treated. Gradually increasing the current upon activation then gradually decreasing when off. Something is tugging me at your life expectancy issue though. With the fizzling being severe enough for one to make a thread about it, it has to be pretty intense. What kind of liquid are you using? It sounds like it can be a bit too thin and just burning way to hot for the filament. Also whats the unit, batteries and voltage?

There are a couple of things that can be going wrong here and not directly atomiser related:
  • Vaping at HV will indeed decrease the life expectancy of any atomiser;
  • Dripping on a hot atomiser causes thermal shock (quenching the coil (causes rapid shrinking)) and thus decrease the life of the atty. It is better to reload an atty when cool e.g drip and vape, let cool and drip and vape again. If you touch your atty to your cheek during a vape session and it is too hot to be held there, you are vaping too hot; and
  • Partially flooded attys will also lead to pre-mature failure and will feel excessively hot to the touch.

At what voltage are you vaping at? What resistance is the atty?

My attys sizzle as well but my longevity is into months not weeks and it is perfectly normal. However, I normally vape thusly:
  • I hit the button as the PV is coming up to my face;
  • I take a 3-5 second hit; and
  • I release the button while I continue to suck during the last second of the 3-5 second hit. This seems unnatural in the beginning but becomes habit after a short time.
The sizzling is the atomiser cooling off and is totally natural. By doing the aforementioned method this ensures you get vapour and not a mixture of vapour and air (start of hit), ensures the atty has warmed up before liquid is drawn into the cup, and you get the last bit of liquid vaporized during the "toot".

Thanks guys, you all brought up some great points. I am definitely feeding juice onto a hot atomizer, I am also tooting a bit too often. The idea that the juice is getting too hot makes a lot of sense. Currently, I using a red sky modd VV (5.2v), hv atty (4.2ohms), and my juice is a 70/30 pg blend from BWB. I initially thought I was giving the atty to much power, but it only measured 6.43watts, i didn't consider I was firing to often, not giving it a chance to cool down. I'm going to switch up my technique today, will report back tonight. Thanks a bunch guys ;)
