Has anyone tried using one of these mods with the standard three battery holder and rechargeable aaa's? I would think at 4.5 volts it would work well, or does voltage under load drop to much?

If you're talking about the plastic holder that comes in the flashlights, I just tried it to see...hardly any vapor at all on fresh Duracell AAA batts (non-rechargeable).

If ya'll wanna jump ship for a little while, I made a couple flashlight mods using 10440s in the original 3 AAA holder with the terminals rearranged so only one was in circuit. The other two slots were storage only. Did that because I had about a dozen of those left over from e-cigars.
Moved on to the 18650 in the Auto parts flashlight, buttswitched, and front switched.
The dollar store flashlight needed "leetle" quarters, but the aluminum is much thinner and "sharp", ouch.

Several examples in the VapeAtron forum, in the 'Cheap all day sucker' thread.

Holy Sheet Batman !
all I saw on page one was $30 to $50 flashlights.

The nine LED flashlights at most Auto Parts Stores seem to be just a little thicker aluminum than the super cheap Dollar Store Flashlights. Madvapes has some on his site but, even though I've dealt with him I've never bought one of his. Ebay has a zillion in the $2 or less category. (I Cheapo)

If you are going to put in Diodes, regulators, shift registers, timers, etc., then there ain't enough room for a 18650. If just a switch, battery, and a connector, then I haven't run into one that is too small yet, close but soo far so good.

Do the cheap.

Just responding to a specific request.
I've been trying to find a flashlight that'd support an 18650 without modification

ok. i have a question to all the experts here. i wanna make a 5 volt using an aluminum mini maglite. so i connect the pos terminal to one side of switch the other side goes to reg Vin and Vout goes to center bat connector. do i have to connect the external connector part (ground) to regulator or can i just have it making contact to the flashlight body? does it make sense? thanks!

Your terms are confusing.

- the pos terminal-> which... on the atty connector or the battery?

- center bat connector-> the positive of the battery?

Make sure you use Hoog's recommended double fender washer, pressed in connector recommendations, not just glued in with the circuit board.

Which end do YOU want to blow out?

I've heard some just use quarters instead. ;)

And there is also this method. 8-o

det_rob_NOSE.jpg

the +terminal on the battery. i stick the 2 batteries on the tube than the piece of plastic that im gonna put a screw in the middle and from there run a wire to the momentary switch... (is it even more confusing?)
the positive battery connector for the atty (i think. im confused now)
Well here's a diagram someone posted and a pinout for a TI reg, maybe it will help.
