Flat-top or button-top, what's the difference?

I'm a bit confused as to what, if any, are the differences between flat-top and button-top batteries. Is it just the physical shape? Do they perform any differently and if not, why do they even have the two different styles? Seems like more batteries would be able to fit into more devices, if only the manufacturers would just pick one standard or the other, and stick with it. Or is there more to it than that? Are there any situations (besides just "this battery compartment is the wrong size") when one style would be preferred/required, over the other?

It's just the physical shape, there is no performance difference between the two styles.

The button can be used as a way to make it impossible to fire the device if the battery is put in with the polarity reversed. I believe Provape did this with the Provari. I'm not aware of any other benefit to this style of enclosure.

I agree with Ryedan. It's easier to easily see which end is positive with a button top battery: safety concerning reverse polarity with batteries.

I happen to believe that button tops are made to vent gas easier than flat tops, which makes them safer batteries IMHO. You can see what I believe are vent holes in the button (flat tops don't have the vent holes).
