I recently bought some flavor extracts so I could make my own juice. I was reading the ingredients last night and I noticed the ingredient "organic ethyl alcohol". Whats the deal with that? Is that normal? I've looked around and these guys are the only ones I've seen with the alcohol in it. Here's the disclaimer:

Warning: Our flavor extracts contain alcohol and may be flammable. Please do not use flavor extracts directly in an atomizer or cartomizer. Typical flavor extract usage for e-liquid is approximately 20% flavor extract to 80% Vegetable Glycerin (VG) or Propylene Glycol (PG).

I'm new to the whole DIY stuff so I just wanted to check around. Maybe just different vendors make it different ways???.....Thanks everyone.

EDIT:

I may have just answered my own question...

Many ejuice flavoring and juice are alcohol based. I imagine that warning statement was placed on the product because someone was unwise enough to actually put undiluted extract directly in an atomizer and got a logical and unhappy result.

Agreed. I was just unaware that alcohol was even in these extracts. I think TPA and Lorann don't use alcohol. Like you said though, some use it and some don't.

Thanks RaRvn

Ok.....so based on our previous conversations....is it safe to assume you CANNOT add additional flavoring if you are using the alcohol based extracts? I only ask this because the gentleman at Madvapes where I bought the extract said, and I quote, "DO NOT USE MORE THAN 20% AS IT IS FLAMABLE AND WILL CATCH FIRE". So if I want more flavor in my juice I guess I shoud stick with the extracts without alcohol. Kinda a no brainer...I guess.

I doubt that a little more alcohol-based flavoring would make it combustible, but 20% seems like a reasonable limit to be safe.

It also depends upon how much of the flavoring carrier is alcohol. Some may have water or PG as well as alcohol.

Another consideration is: Do you want to vape 40+ proof e-liquid? Many people seem to think that the alcohol 'burns off' as in cooking, and won't affect you. That's BS. Alcohol will simply evaporate in the contained area of the atomizer, and you will inhale it with the rest of the vapor. The alcohol will slowly evaporate out of the liquid while not being inhaled as well, so that helps.

Anyway, I prefer to keep alcohol-based flavorings to a minimum, and haven't had problems with 7% or less. I noticed effects from the first 20% or so mix I made with a Mad Vapes grape extract, though.

I totally agree. Although at first thought, a 40 proof anything doesn't sound so bad. :) However....not when it comes to my e-juice. I'll drink alcohol once in a while but I don't want to inhale it on a daily basis. Then again, is the amout of alcohol vapor we would get even really bad for you and if so....how bad? Eh...I think I'll just play it safe and stick to the alcohol free stuff. I believe Lorann is alcohol free and TFA as well.

Think of the quantities...

If you average 5ml a day and you max out at 20% alcohol then you'd have consumed 1ml of alcohol in the course of a day.

Thats less than the amount of alcohol your liver produces a day. (Liver produces a different alcohol, but it's just a comparison.)

Not to mention some of that is even evaporated before you even get the chance to toot it all in. :) Minor details....

;)

Whoa...I just realized you said 5ml a day. Do people actually vape that much? Holy moly. I'm lucky if I do 2ml a day. I'm at 24mgs though. That might be why I don't use as much.

When I started DIY I was going through 7-12ml of 40mg per day. (Nearly the same about of premixed 48mg before I started mixing my own.)

Today I average about 6-7ml of 20mg per day.

I think the average is 3-5ml per day??? Where would I get that info? Why do I remember that as if it is fact?

Wow man. 12ml a day at 40mg. I can't even imagine. I fill up a CE2 clearomizer with 24mg and I'm good for the day. Maybe, just maybe if I feel crazy I'll refill it in the evening and needless to say I have plenty left the next day.

Yea, when I first started, I vaped 2-3ml of 18mg. Now that I vape <1-2mg, I chain vape. Easily 10ml a day, if not more..
