Learning to Navigate a forum for the first time can be both intimidating and confusing. :2c: Although I original conceived of this thread as an aide to Beau and Nick, I realized there are probably plenty of people that can benefit from it. I hope everyone can contribute to this thread with their own "best practices".

I'd cordially ask that we keep this thread relatively "on track" so that we can continue to use it as a resource. Also, if there is anyone with the time and inclination - some of those nifty tutorials with screenshots would be most helpful. Aside from trying to get N&B up and running fast, I hope it can serve as a resource for anyone new to the forums that's having difficulty with some of the features, etc.

So - what strategies do you use to quickly and efficiently navigate the forums?

Changing your signature to the NT Forum Banner:

Click on Settings (upper right hand corner), then Edit Signature (under My Settings on the left).

(in a separate window) Visit the the Nicoticket Success Banner Page and populat the relevant information (Date/time you quit smoking, number of nails you used to smike, cost per pack, etc) and choose a background color. Hit the generate button. Click inside the BB Code for Forums Field that appears ONCE. It will highlight the entire field. Hit control C to copy the text.

Return to ECF: Paste the code you just generated into the text box - click save signature. Go post to test to make sure it works.

Added note: The "counter" portion of the banner get's loaded into your cache to speed up load times on the forum. We reccomend periodically hitting F5, or the refresh button on your browser, to update the timer/cancer sticks avoided/money saved stuff, etc.

This is just a "short list" of recurring topics that get asked about or places I need to send people for information time and again. Most of these are links specific to ECF but some are external links for reference information as well.

I excluded from this particular list my links to vendor retail sites or to specific products on those sites. And I left out a sub category or two. (Like putting up the DIY links here would be kinda tacky...) But just to give you an idea, this is a hella lot faster for me to get people where they need to go with organized bookmarks, than searching time and again for the same URL's. That, and subscribing to threads via ECF as a way to keep track of stuff can be kind of kludgy and has certain limitations. (You can bookmark right to a specific post, but you can't 'subscribe' to a specific post.)

Places I find myself telling people to go time and again. :D

To easily navigate to threads that you have participated in, subscribe to them to be notified when there have been responses posted in the thread. How?

1. At the top of the thread click the "thread tools" drop down arrow and select "subscribe to this thread." Follow prompts.
2. To see your subscribed threads click the "quick links" drop down at the top of the forum and select "subscribed thhreads".
3. The threads that you have subscribed to will show up here, but only if there has been activity inside that particular thread.

It's a handy tool if you post all over the forums.

I subscribe to specific forums.

Nicoticket

After clicking that link, I would use the drop down arrow for Forum Tools (near the top) and subscribe.

When I return to ECF each day, I click Settings at the top of the page and from there I can go to each Forum subscribed to and see any new threads as well as which threads contain new postings.

Someone may have better methods but this works well for me.

To find a post by a specific person and/or use keywords (or vice versa), above the first post on the page choose "Search Thread" (or "Search Forum" if you are in the main Nicoticket forum page) and select "Advanced"

ECFAdvancedSearch1.jpg

When the Advanced Search opens up, you will want to focus on the first search section as that will allow you to search from "where you are" rather than all over ECF. Here, you can put in keywords and/or the person who's post you want to see. This is very helpful when you are looking for a particular post or all the posts (recent first) from a particular person:

Hit the little quote ("+) box in the lower right hand corner to the right of the "Reply with Quote" for each post you wish to add to your multi quote in any given thread. ;)

And then when you get to the end hit Reply to Thread over the comment box and all the quotes will show in the box so you can answer every one in turn. ;)

Just a tip on this... if you are running a dark theme i.e.the ECF 2 Darkened theme you will not see the "+ box, (It blends with the darker background), but if you hover in that vicinity you will see the tool-tip pop up for it.
