freaking passthru!!

bought a USB pass through from altsmoker that went south, burned out an atomizer.

got the replacement pass through today and it burned out another atomizer.

plugged the atomizer into a battery to see if it was truly shot, the battery got too hot to touch and now the green LED wont turn off even with the atomizer removed.

so now ive lost 2 atomizers and a battery from using pass throughs, only got 1 battery 2 atomizers and the screwdriver left.

i have figured out why the atomizer failed, it got hot enough to desolder its connection, pretty sure i can fix that.

Use your oldest atty with your pass though, they don't sizzle as much and I think it helps them by getting hotter and get some of the stuff off of them. Then I clean them and the pt helps get them started again. I hate that sizzle sound too.

Atty are terrible, I have had new one drop dead.

Are you plugging the passthrough into a USB port on a computer, a power pack or to one of those wall converter that plugs onto a wall outlet?

If it happened with just one passthrough I would be inclined to agree that the passthrough is bad. Since it happened with two completely different pasthroughs I would be inclined to say your power source is the actual problem.

The Power Source is "most likely" the culprit. I have had tons of battery issues, yet my one passthrough atty prob was my usb battery pack. It was adjustable in its voltage and as a typical guy I had it at the max output. Make sure if you are using a computer your USB drivers are up to date, if its a wall adapter or car adapter"Stop Using It".

I'm sorry if I sound daft, but are you saying NOT to use a USB passthrough with a wall wart or car adaptor, and only use it on the computer??

I just got a battery passthrough and was told that if all possible NOT to use it on the computer, but use them with wall warts (aka wall adaptors) or car adaptors....8-o

A USB passthrough is very safe to use on any device that provides power through a USB port. I think the problems related to computer USB ports are twofold. First, many USB port on computers do not put out the ideal 5 volts at 1 ampere. This means the passthrough would perform differently on different computers. I think manufacturers addressed this problem by building in-line batteries into pass-throughs. This way, your atomizer is receiving consistant voltage from the battery while the USB port is providing recharging current to the battery.

Second, it has been reported that passthroughs have caused problems with computer function. This may be related to the power demands from your atomizer trying to draw more power than the USB port might be able to provide. For example, I have a cooling pad sitting under my laptop on my desk. It has several USB ports built-in. If I run a passthrough on the cooling pad, the fans slow down. Too much current draw. On my laptop, my passthrough works fine.

If your computer does not operate properly when the passthrough is in use, then look for another power source like a battery pack. If your computer operates fine with the passthrough connect...keep vaping.

Any chance you're pluging it into an overclocked PC? That just doesnt sound right.

What ever the issue, it's not the vendor's fault.

I just tried using a powered usb hub and it works fine, even disconnected from the computer.

Powered hubs are fairly inexpensive and provide isolation from the computer. Next best thing to an external USB charger or battery.
