I found that'd happen when I was using organic cotton balls, but I noticed it went away with KGD/Japanese cotton.

With organic cotton balls I'd often "prime the wicks" (an expression I've only heard a few times) by dripping on it and simply firing the device without inhaling until the wicks were more or less dry again. After doing this once or twice that weird papery/wood taste goes away.

Cotton bacon V1 was the worst, horrible taste until it broke in and took a good 30 40 mins for me, ive heard V2 doesnt have the funky taste but i havent tried it because V1 was so bad. I see no point on spending extra money on cotton when muji works just great for me, i peel one outer layer off of it, but i did a. Test thru a paper plate and it wicks faster with both outer layers on tho, just a habit i always do I take one outer layer off

Put 3 pieces thru a paper plate one with no outer layers one with one outer layer and one with both outer layers then put it so the bottom of the wicks are just submerged in water, put the paper plate over a bowl or something. Let me know which one wicks up to the plate 1st

Water isn't really analogous to e-liquid, and Pbusardo already did something quite similar to this.

I had the same problem you did! When wicking your cotton, and before putting on your tank/dripper shell, do a few burns with the wicks juiced. Put a few drops on the wicking and use the fire button atleast 5 times for a few seconds each. Put on a few drops, fire, and then put on more drops and fire, until you get about 5-10 "hits" worth without actually "hitting" it. Just blow air onto the wick as you are doing it. Then saturate the wick again and assemble to vape. This tip i learned online and it worked wonders for getting rid of the cotton/perfumey taste without actually having to taste it.
