Friendly Reminder

Hi Everybody. i just want to give everyone a friendly reminder that e cigs and e liquid can be extremely dangerous stuff. My world was almost just flipped upside down. i was in my bedroom organizing all my vaping supplies in the box that i keep it all in. i went downstairs for about 5 minutes to check email and returned to see my dog chewing on a 15 ml bottle of e juice. the bottle had been pierced by my dogs teeth and liquid was leaking out. i immediately yelled at my dog as loud as i could making him drop it and i took him into the bathroom and washed his mouth out with water and made him drink. the bottle was still almost full and all the juice missing was probably the juice that was on the bottle and my hands so i got unbelievably lucky that i caught my best friend in time before he ingested a deadly amount of e liquid. so far he has not shown any signs of nicotine poisoning. my juice was only 6 mg mic so even a few drops wouldn't be lethal but i am in shock right now and so thankful that i caught this in time. i know that not everybody on here is as clumsy and careless as me, and I'm not trying to lecture anyone or talk down to anyone because i know that you are all responsible, i just wanted to give everyone a reminder to keep your supplies out of reach of pets and children at all times. this was a wake up call for me and i will be sure to double check that i tucked everything away and shut my door from now on. happy vaping everyone and have a good day!

That's a horrible tragedy. I'm glad your doggy is ok. I have 2 dogs in my house. I keep all my stuff up high where they can't reach it. Nicotine is highly poisonous to dogs and small children in high contents. It's always critical to use high safety measures. My dogs are like one of my children, so I feel your anxiety.

Thanks for the reminder, and I'm really glad your pup is okay. We have 4 dogs in the house, 3 of our own plus a foster, so I try to constantly keep track of where everything is and make sure nothing is out before I leave a room. Thankfully they're small so they can't reach countertops, but one will get up on the kitchen table or a desk if chairs aren't pushed in. I would be devastated if anything happened to any of them. Thanks for posting the reminder, especially for new vapers who might not realize it!

in case anyone is curious, the toxic level of nicotine for dogs is 5 mg for pounds. so realistically my juice is not harmful to my dog unless a whole bottle or more was consumed but nonetheless it was a huge wakeup call

Any dog owner should have in their ER kit activated charcoal which adsorbs a chemical or toxicant and facilitates its excretion

Just reading that is horrifying! Don't know what I'd do if my carelessness led to the loss do my loyal Alsatian! I also keep everything high up but when Alsatians stand on their two back feet they're almost as tall as me.

Going to be overly paranoid now and double check everything is high up enough

Sorry to hear that Ryan Kelly - I looked into the whole pet thing too - a lot of people have. You can find some
threads here on ECF about it. What I read is some dogs are drawn to some flavors. So yeah - you do have to
keep an eye on your e-liquid. The studies on nic I've read say that most likely thing is they regurgitate
immediately if it's too much. Dogs will sniff it out and they don't have too much trouble getting at & into things
- they are stinkers.
But better safe than sick.
Now you know.

tank or fish products so they rushed me to hospital & had my stomach pumped (I hadn't consumed anything
- but I was so young I have no memory of it)

These things happen but they won't again to your pup.

Thanks for the warning and reminder, Ryan. So glad there was no harm done to your pooch. Those of us who have dogs/cats and children should really be extra careful with our nic juice.

I have a tiny poodle, and she absolutely goes crazy for anything plastic and soft, like the material the nic bottles are made from. I am very careful that my stuff is kept up high and in a box where she can't get it.

You gotta think about it like this: can you imagine how delicious a bottle of desserty-flavored nic juice would taste to a dog who eats dog food all day?

First I am glad your pup is good and thanks for the information on the toxic level of nicotine. I have two pups and there is always concern about them grabbing a bottle or the vaper towel I use when I change coils or wicks.

My German Shorthair once ate a full pack of cigarettes (show's you they'll eat anything) and puked for hours.

I think the peppery burning sensation would cause my dog to immediately vomit it all back up again. She's been known to help herself to an unattended plate of food before and she's always vomited it straight back up again because she doesn't agree with the heat.

Besides. She HATES anything fruity or remotely healthy. So my Apple eliquid (all day Vape) wouldn't even attract the slightest bit of attention. Still. I'm always making sure that that tiny drop of clear liquid on the floor is water and not eLiquid and scrubbing it until my hand hurts just to be safe

On a more serious note, it's this kind of stuff that worries me. A lot of people that don't really understand the severity of Nicotine poisoning or the importance of keeping these liquids away from animals and children are starting to realise that buying eLiquid and refilling a clearo is cheaper than buying pre-filled cartos. As they grow in popularity I'm afraid we're going to see more news reports about poisonings because people haven't kept their Vaping gear in the right place.

That was my thought, too. If the matter hadn't been so serious, I would even have been tempted to quip to the OP, "Did you report it to Poison Control?" Seriously, though, I am paranoid about my kids (who should be old enough to know better but, c'mon, they're kids!) and my cats. I never leave the drawer open where I store my liquids, and I fastidiously wipe down the bathroom counter after I refill my tanks. Unfortunately, many people don't think about these things.
