hi all,

i've seen a similar thread about coffee flavor extraction in this forum and i got to thinking about how places like tfa or lorann get their flavorings...im sure a lot of it is chemical synthesis but even so how did people get flavor extractions years ago?

i have a lot of black berries growing in my area and i wouldnt mind trying to extract and make my own flavorings...does anyone know where you'd start for a flavor extraction from fruit?

i'd like to try others as well

i did some google searching but there wasnt much

Squeezing? :) You might want to read up on wine making. The focus there is much more on fermenting than on extracting, but there are probably techniques that could be adapted.

I researched this awhile back and didn't find much, but here was the plan I came up with to try (haven't got around to it yet):

1) get a bunch of blackberries; crush them into a paste/pulp.
2) get some grain alcohol and put that paste in it. Cap it. Wait a couple weeks. Maybe shake once in awhile.
3) filter out the solid bits, so you have clean blackberry shine.
4) mix the alcohol with PG; let it sit until the alcohol evaporates away, leaving (hopefully) blackberry flavored PG.

NO idea if this would actually work, or how strong the flavor would be if it did. My guess is you would not have flavoring so much as 0mg blackberry ejuice. I am especially unsure about how the alcohol evaporation works; whether it leaves all flavoring behind or takes flavor with as it evaporates. If it leaves flavoring, you could theoretically make a HUGE batch of alcohol and leave all the flavoring in a small PG base, thus concentrating it.

All I know is, I use a lot of NF and those things are full of alcohol, and many many people let that evaporate out just fine.
