Purchased a whole ball of Cotton Wick from Michael's about a week ago and have made roughly 5-6 dual coil builds with said wick. Ive tried coiling it similar to Silica wick by wrapping the wick with the Kanthal on about 4 of the builds I have done. All 4 in which resulted in burnt cotton. I did not dry burn it, but I seemed to have coiled the wick way too tight. The other 2 builds I did, I mounted the kanthal first then proceeded to shoot the cotton through the mounted wire. But unfortunately, on both builds, I received numerous hot spots which would not go away even though I tried to fiddle with these hot spots. How exactly do I wrap this cotton wick loose enough to where it does not choke the cotton wick? It seems really hard to do, because if I do loosley wrap it, it seems that I will get hotspots all over when I fire it. Also, like I stated, its hard to mount the wire first because it also results in numerous hot spots. Please anyone help, with the easiest most effective way to wrap and build using cotton wick.

Thanks

I've used cotton and yarn wicks on my IGO-L drippers using the method I read here on the forums:

Wrap the coil on a toothpick, and while it is still on the toothpick mount it on the dripper. Remove the tooth pick and start pulsing the coil to check for hotspots. I pulse quite a few times because it also stiffens the coil.

After getting the coil set and stiffened up, pull your cotton wick through the coil, wet it thoroughly, and enjoy!

Hey bro, check this photo tutorial on a very easy coil build and cotton wick install. It's using rolled cotton, which is like a cotton ball. Using cotton ball / rolled cotton as a medium allows you to make a wick to match your coil rather than make a coil to match your wick. Have a look :

Although the atomizer may look different , it's the same principal :)

Thanks man I appreciate it, will mounting the coil while still wrapped on the toothpick, or screw driver/metal stick, prevent any coils being uneven? Like I said when I mounted my coils I did so without keeping the coils on the toothpick and as a result, I had areas of my coil that did not touch any part of the wick, which is what I struggled with MOST when mounting my coils on first..

It has definitely worked for me. I've never had a hotspot doing it this way.

I use peaches and creme cotton yarn. Bunched into 3 to 4 stands and wrap a coil on it. No needle no paperclip needed. Just carefully wrapped. Works great for me. I have used the drill bit then threaded cotton through. Works really well too.

How exactly do you carefully wrap it though? How do you get it to the point where it is not too tight nor not too loose? Everytime I have done it its either been too tight, which results in an immediate burnt vape, or its too loose to where some parts of either coil does not touch the cotton wick, which also leads to a burnt metallic taste.

Before I really used cotton I had the same issues. I think I would choke the wick . Once you know what to look for in a coil it's easy. you could try wrapping it, make sure it's uniform. then soak in juice and taste it. Too dry? Pull a couple stands out. Popping too much? start over or thread new cotton in. just keep playing with it and experiment.

When Jules Winnfield tells you how to make a microcoil, you listen and don't say "what."

I wraps coils so that they are touching each other or as close to touching as I can wrap them. Like this.,

Then I roll up the cotton nice and dense, just thick enough that I feel slight resistance when I'm pulling it thru the coil.

Alright I appreciate it.

Thing is, I am usually vaping with Sub Ohm coils and not Micro coils.

Nonetheless I will still attempt your method, thanks!

Just checking, did you boil the cotton to sterilize it? This is highly recommended for yarn and similar things that aren't packaged sterile, unlike gauze or cotton balls which are sterile. You just want to make sure it is 100% cotton with no contaminants.

If you have normal #4 yarn, its diameter should be about 2 mm give or take. Your best bet is to find a drill bit or other forming tool that is this diameter and wrap the coil first. 2 mm is about 5/64". Wrap up an evenly spaced coil at the desired resistance and mount it in the RBA. Pulse it red hot a few times to clean it. Make final adjustments and thread the sterile cotton through. Saturate with juice and vape it. It will taste cottony at first, but that will eventually go away. Make absolutely sure that the cotton stays saturated or it will burn. The exact fit in the coil is also crucial to a good vape and burn prevention.

UPDATE:

wanted to update everyone, including those who were/will look at this thread for cotton wick advice,

As I stated I proceeded to follow super_X_drifter's technique and it works wonderfully! Thanks man.

However, I did stumble upon a couple obstacles for, I do not have the same time of cotton wick material as his/hers, the cotton wick I purchased, is more of a Cotton yarn and is roughly 1mm thick, or thin haha. So I had to shoot more cotton through the built coils over and over to avoid any hot spots. However I did succeed and now have a wonderful flavorful vape. This Vanilla Custard I am vaping, (Grimm Creations, yall should try it) has never tasted better.

Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it!

Yes I do boil all my cotton before wicking!
