It's probably due to the fact that Heads have been using vaporizors for a long time to get their THC.
I was sitting in the bed of my truck one day, waiting for someone and an old Hippy (that's me Profiling as I'm sure you were being profiled) pulled in and parked next to me, got out of the car and said "Nice pipe, where'd you get it?". I told him that it was a nicotine device and he had an "Oh" look on his face and moved on.
