Funny Taste w/Custom atties?

Okay so I recently did a atty reconstruction mod and successfully fixed the atty to work once again. But now, as I use the gutted body of a carto (for the connector), I cant seem to get this thing to taste right. I even used the same 1.5" as I did on the reconstructed atty. I almost want to say that its too hot as I get random hot bursts of air and popping juice into my mouth. Also I have found it to stop functioning then coming back to it a few minutes later reveals it still works. Checked the connections, all looks good.

Can any experienced atty builders give me some advice? I'm new and learning

I think I found out the issue, after taking it apart I found that the firewick was burnt and very dry. Now Comes an issue I didnt foresee with making an atty from scratch; How to keep the atty moist?

The coil tightness plays a major role.
Not wicking, to tight. Too lose burnt taste. I'm still learning also.
