I have a few button-top 18650 batteries from a long ago defunct LavaTube mod. Looking at getting another single 18650 device so as not to waste said batteries; however, regardless of where I look, there never seems to be a mention of what type of (flat/button) battery is required for the mods I'm looking into. So, is it safe to assume that it doesn't matter (i.e. either will work)? If it does matter, do you have a recco for a single replaceable 18650 button-top mod? Thanks much for any insight.

99% of the mods being produced post 2013 are all flat top. Can you run a button top in them, depends, if, you can fit the battery in, being a button top is about 1mm taller than a flat top. You'd also be bettery served getting a more current generation battery to begin with that has a CDR of 20amps or higher, being most of these current mods need at least 20amp CDR supply available.

Long runtime - Samsung 30Q 3000mah 20amp CDR
Median Runtime/Median CDR - Sony VTC5A 2500mah 25amp CDR
Low Runtime/High CDR - LG HB6 1500mah 30amp CDR

Welcome and glad you joined. Why take the chance, not knowing what you will end up with and how you plan to vape.
To be safe, recycling the batteries may be the best option.

You will find some trouble fitting those batteries in a box mod. Most of them, these days, are built for flat tops. A tube mech will take them just fine. That said, batteries don't last forever. If you're going to spring for another mod, snag a couple batteries while you're about it.
