Well Today is a happy day after months of tinkering and countless wicks and coils I think I have finally got it down It was a battle hours in the man room just trying to get that perfect coil with no hot spots or shorts think you got a good one only to have a short a few puffs later the wife yelling that all I do is mess with that ecig saying this is ridiculous I liked it better when you just smoked cigarettes at least you didn't spend hours of the day messing with them or why cant you just go back to that ecig that looked like a cig with the little light at the end that glowed, Why is it so big or you got another package that's 4 this week, how much do you really spend on this! has finally paid off all the frustration of the learning curb I didn't give up and now I can make and wrap a good coil in no time with very few shorts or hot spots my flavor is great and the vapor is amazing Just thought I would share my triumph with all of you and those that are going through the phase stick with it, you will get better and it is worth it best vape ever.

Hey when did my wife move in with you!? :)

Been there lately myself.. lol..

Congrats on the builds! I wish I could say I had as much trouble as you and others and maybe it's just pure luck because it seems the more and more I learn the more problems I have. Much like my golfing career (yeah right) in which I was pretty good not knowing anything about the game, swing, etc and as soon as I started to buckle down and try to improve this and tweak that it went to hell. Sometimes not thinking too much about something is the key to success.

They do say ignorance is bliss right? Sometimes I need to slip more into ignorance so I can be more blissful! :D

I may be wrong but it looks like there are gaps between your coil/wick (coil isn't touching the wick anywhere, it's floating)? If so that would mean the entire coil is burning too hot (one giant hot spot).

Just making sure you know that the coil has to touch the wick (evenly all around). I learned that the hard way just recently lol.

Zen's method is the best way for me to wrap the coils using kanthal wire. When done right you can literally pull out the wick to do dry burns to clean the coil. But seems to me that your wick isn't the best....or else you wouldn't have a short if you wrap the coils a bit too tight.

Ok that is good. Some suggestions on your next wick, make the wick as solid and thick as possible with no hole. Don't over torch....Some people here torch it, quench it and repeat a bunch of times and they obliterate their wicks. Torch it only once.....when the wick get orange hot, continue for only 15 seconds....and that's it. Also flame burn the wick with eliquid 3 times and your done.

The problem with kanthal wire is that you have to adjust the coils regularly to continue to have the perfect vape, read my posts in the Kanthal/Nichrome sticky thread at the top of this forum...post 89 and 91. Make your next build with nichrome wire. I am getting as good as vape with Nichrome but instead of vaping at 4.5 volts I am vaping at 3.4V, my batteries last way longer and I don't have to adjust the coils every day to have the perfect vape. It is far easier to do coils with nichrome. Read the posts if you have questions let me know.

maybe i just get lucky all the time, but i have a couple of gennys, a couple of real dids and an aga-t. after i build a coil and do the initial messing with, i never have to re-adjust any of my coils until the next build. i do dry burn every couple of days and just like the first day, they always completly fire up evenly. i use 28g wire with 500mesh, 5 wraps gives me around 0.09 ohms. ever since i have been using a small screwdriver inserted into the wick hole with the wire wraped around it first then inserting the wick i honestly do not have to re-adjust any coils. this method works extremely well, being that the coils are not to tight around the wick i am able to slide the wick in & out easily to dry burn the coils and to rinse the wick.

The problem I have with Kanthal are many fold. Kanthal is very unresponsive compared to Nichrome. I don't like long drags and with Kanthal you almost always have to take long drags. I also don't like how kanthal makes your batteries drain so fast. If you use nichrome, your batteries last 3 times longer and instead of taking 4-5 second drags you will be more than satisfied with 2 second drags. With kanthal if you have a 2.2 ohm coil you would normaly vape it at 4.5ohms, I am currently vaping a 2.7ohm nichrome coil at 3.6 volts and it is a steam machine. And the funny thing is.... it is a pretty warm vape. I forgot to mention that nichrome coils don't nearly gunk up as bad as Kanthal coils. I just don't see any advantage to Kanthal. When I get a chance I will make a thread about how to set up a nichrome coil.

actually never tried nichrome wire, except in the penelope i used to own. in that i never had tried kanthal. so in nichrome if i were to have the same set-up as i am using now, 28g about a 1.0 ohm coil @ 3.5 volts or so. doing this on my provari with my did atomizer what difference would it be, or how whould it be different. or with nichrome you wouldnt need to go that low with the ohms in the first place?
