Hard to give advice without knowing what tank you're using.

Whenever I'm on a fresh fill on an eVod (or similar; protank, protank 2, etc) I dry hit if I don't take some dry pulls between hits. Usually I just fill it and take two or three good hard drags, and take a good hard drag once every six or seven hits for the first little bit then I can just vape like normal. This is because the tank is full (thus it wicks less) and when I set down the base to fill the tank the liquid soaks into the paper towel I set it on and dries out the wick.

I have the same issue on my PT2! It will taste great up until my last vape before refilling then once I refill it - BAM ! - burnt taste ? I'm not sure why this happens but it goes away after a couple minutes leading me to believe that the quick time the wicks are no longer submerged in ejuice they dry out a bit?

I'm currently using the evod and get dry hits all the time usually when the tank is full seems to be the worst. I do the pulls in between hits. The only thing that seems to work is loosening and retightening it from the base (the one that attaches the "chimney" to the tank). There appears to be some sort of vacuum created during hits and this appears to break up the vacuum. It's a pain but it's what I have to work with at the moment. Using 40%vg-60%pg.

Silica does not wick nearly as well as cotton. There are several threads here on using cotton. Even if you don't want to completely rebuild your heads, you could remove the silica wicks when new (or even after using) and replace with either:

1. organic cotton balls (probably good idea to boil 20 min and dry before using so boil several balls so you don't have to do this but rarely)

2. Walmart Peaches & Cream brand Ecru (color) 100% cotton. It is always recommended to boil formed cotton before using (like yarn) because of additives used to help it keep its form. 20min minimum, then let dry.

3. CVS (or the like) sterilized rolled cotton. (People claim this needs no boiling.)

Which ever method, you pull off enough (dried) cotton to roll between your fingers into a wick, and thread it through the coil. (With the yarn just unravel the strands and use two or so... don't use yarn myself so maybe someone else can chime in with how many strands to use.) The thickness should just be enough that you start to feel resistance pulling it through the coil. It will swell when it gets wet. Trim both ends and prime with a drop of juice right on top of the coil. Put head back together and let the mod sit a few minutes so the cotton has time to soak up the juice.

The first 3 or 4 hits will taste like cotton so don't inhale if you don't want, but after that the cotton taste goes away and all you get is flavor. Much more so than silica, and it wicks better, so you won't get dry hits as long as there is juice in your tank.

You may or may not need a flavor wick (can also be made of cotton), per your juice and coil type. If you require a flavor wick and don't use one, you might get gurgling or leaking. But not everyone needs them and if you don't need it and use one, you'll get less vapor and reduced performance. Some experimenting might be necessary. But in the long run, it's totally worth it, imo.

NOTE: You cannot dry burn cotton.

It's possible.... Give it about 10 minutes after a refill before hitting it.

The protanks like T3's, evods and similar attys all produce a vaccuum to pull the juice down into the wick. Once you've broken that vaccuum you could get a couple drier hits after refilling, it happens to my protanks so I take like previously stated a couple smaller dry puffs and slow draw powered hits until that slight vaccuum is created. You also break that vaccuum if you set the atty on its side.
