Make sure that your cart is seated correctly in the atomizer. The two flat sides should be parallel to the bridge of the atomizer. When I used carts, I switched to the whistle tips so that took all the guess work of aligning it right.

Is the two flat sides you are reffering to, the part you put in your mouth? If so, I have that parallel to the top of the battery, where the manual button is.

Carts can be very annoying that way. Hard to keep them working well. It sounds like the cart is getting dry. Make sure you are topping the cart off often and not trying to get all the juice out before refilling. You can even place a drop on your atomizer when refilling. If you vape frequently, carts can not transfer as much juice to the atomizer as the atomizer is using.... Look into direct dripping. I've tried many many mods to carts to get them to perform to my liking. Sometimes they work well, sometimes not. Carts seem to me the most work in the whole vaping experience.

Like I said above, get a drip tip and direct drip your juice right onto your atomizer A drip tip replaces the cart. There is no polyfill. Just a hole in the mouth piece for you to drip your e juice directly onto your atomizer. Most recommend 3 drops per filling. The drip tip will last forever almost. The vaping experience is better and you finally eliminate the hassle of carts.

You could also try using a cartomizer instead of atomizer/carts. Cartomizers will not last nearly as long as a good atomizer, but they are cheap.

something to also take note of would be that sometimes the prefilled cartoz might actually come to you dry (depending on when they were filled). Most of the prefilled come from china so there's really no telling. If you have a bottle of liquid then I would take the advice above and take the "lid" (soft or hard cover part of the mouthpiece) off and drip some more juice in there. Personally I have switched to direct dripping on a low resistance atty with my 3.7 eGo XL battery.. the battery lasts all day, dripping is easy and the flavor and TH are perfect.. but that's just me

Thanks for the info. Where can I get a drip tip that is compatible with the Riva 901?

Drip tip compatibility is based upon you atomizer. So- if you have a 510 atomizer, you need a 510 drip tip. You'll find a variety of them out there. You can get plastic, some are solid colors, some are translucent colors. You can also get machined aluminum onces. I have been very happy with Litecigusa.net. Great selection. Most suppliers have drip tips now. Carts are out :) Drip tips will also fit a cartomizer too.

While you are waiting, you can make your own drip tip of sorts. Just take the polyfill out of one of your carts. Or use a cart that came on the atty- same thing. If your atomizer is dry, just place a few drops right onto your atty and pop your empty cart back on. It will vape similar to a drip tip, you'll just have to pop it off you atty to refill instead. The cart serves as the mouthpiece basically. You don't want any juice in it.

When to refill?
This takes some experience. Don't over drip your atty. Wait until you can taste/feel it is getting dry. If too dry, it will taste awful and give you a scorching throat hit! The point is, add a few drops right before that nasty hit would take place. Most say use three drops per fill. If really dry, use 4. If your not sure it is dry yet, use 2 drops, etc... You'll get the hang of it sooner than you think. Another nice thing about dripping with an empty cart is that you're less likely to suck juice into your mouth. Yummy! Using an empty cart is a great way to learn dripping.

When I first ordered my ecig (kr808 type) and tried the cartomizers it came with which were prefilled, I immediately ordered some empty cartomizers and some eliquid in a bottle. It's may be just my experience but any prefilled cartomizer or cartridge i've gotten has had no flavor or had the burt plastic taste. With the empty carts it's easy to fill them and it's guaranteed fresh. I've actually completely gave up on them though and went to direct dripping and even with that i've had to find my own way of doing it.

This is exactly how I ended up doing it. I then ordered a drip tip but found that during a drag, I get a little bit of liquid on the inside of my bottom lip and it would actually create a burn. I just stopped the drip tip and went back to using my empty carto, which I made even shorter by cutting it down a bit. ( the end that goes into the atty)

I forgot to mention that! Good work on cutting the end piece down. It serves no purpose with out the filler. I'd still get a good drip tip though if I was you. They are meant to last. Most have a nice o-ring for a good seal. Carts will get all scuffed up and are built cheaply. I have noticed the vapor is also warmer with a drip tip vs empty cart. I like that, some may not. It's quite noticeable. Many like 6 volt vaping for the warmth. Like me :) ! If I use a cart like you just modded instead of the drip tip, it really cools the vapor down. Just another way to customize your vaping experience!
