Personally I like 28 guage kanthal and you can use cotton or silica. It's up to you. I like the 28 guage because it seems to be easier to build with than thinner wire or thicker. I find a simple six wrap around a 2.5mm torx driver is the perfect vape on a mechanical mod. 1.2 ohms. If you have a variable wattage/voltage you can wrap it higher ohms. It's really personal preference. You build and wick it right it's awesome. Once you get proficient, I highly recommend the tobecco orchid clone. $17 at 101vape. Its made my $100 Russian and kayfun obsolete!

Enjoy!

I think 28g is pretty middle of the road and seems to hold its shape better than thinner guages. Anything thicker is easy to wrap the coil but hard to get under the tiny screws. I like to wrap my leads around the screw and its really tough with thicker wire.

The orchid has a dual coil deck, two sets of juice channels but it has awesome airflow. It's almost as airy as a dripper and the flavor is better than the kayfun style. I really love it. Real orchids are $150 though...

For my KFLs, I use a 30 ga. Kanthal A-1 and build coils in the 1.2 to 1.5 ohm range.

^^^^ This... I've tried lots of different wires and coils, but honestly for me 30 just works best in the kayfun... Though I personally build for about 1.5 - 1.7 with it... As for the wick, in my own personal opinion forget about the silica and get some good cotton or rayon... Either one will perform so much better...

First of all, I recommend the EHPro Kayfun Lite V2. One of the best kayfuns on the market, for around 35 bucks. Secondly, I recommend you either get a mech mod, or a VV/VW that goes up to 30-50 watts to fully enjoy your kayfun.

Having said that, anywhere from 24g-28g wire is great, along with japanese organic cotton ;)

I have a SvoeMesto Kayfun Lite Plus. I use it on a Provari and occassionally on my iTaste MVP.

I use 28 gauge kanthal, single microcoil @ 1.4 - 1.7 ohms. I find 30 gauge can be brittle to work with, and I can get more wraps with the 28 gauge for better coil surface area. I use the coil build calculator and the tools/supplies in this blog:

I've used organic cotton and cellucotton (rayon). I tend to prefer the rayon as it wicks better and tastes better. I've tried the Koto cotton (Japanese cotton) in my rebuildable drippers, and it seems to provide even more flavor, but I've not used it in my KFL+ yet. I also use the cotton nest wick technique.

I used the following tutorial video and got a great result with my first build:

Good for you Purple! I have an authentic as well and have been nothing but pleased over the last 1/2 yr. you've been given lots of great suggestions here. You might also want to check out the Kayfun Lite thread in rebuildables. Lots of helpful and knowledgeable folks as well.
