I usually clean my atty's, clearos with almost boiling water usually 2-3 times (thanks to my coffee maker), the tip I was told is to let them dry for 24 hours or take a hair dryer to them to speed the process, then dry burn them a few times (if using a manual) to get rid of any remaining taste/moisture before using a new cartridge. As for extending life, I'm sure others will have more insight then myself regarding that.

Sounds like you are doing fine cleaning them. As for how long one atty will last, it depends on the juice, thicker, darker and/or sweeter juices are going to kill any atty faster than thin, light, not sweet ones will. I've had some last as long as 2 months and others only a few days, average is about 6-10 days with the juices in my rotation. (with the exception of the drip atty I use for my atty killer juice and, re coil myself - that juice kills an atty in about 2 ML.)
