Hi folks

It rained all week here in Virginia which hampered the finishing process due to excess humidity. Happy to say it dried up today and I'm back on the second batch. We're almost done.

Here's the second batch, finish sanded and with a third coat of finish applied. Each coat is buffed with 0000 Steel Wool before the next coat is applied. This is time consuming but necessary to get a smooth, glass like finish

The Ebony is spectacular. This is my first time working with all black Gaboon Ebony. Before I had used a striped Ebony that had some brown shades. This one is pitch black and heavy!

Imeo, this is your pure white Birdseye Maple. This one has some beautiful eyes

The other really special one is the Silver Maple which has a slight greenish haze. This one is really a nice piece of wood. You can see inclusions which are natural but it will be completely filled this week

Somopoppy, I never forgot you. Your's is done and I recoated yours. Because of the list, I mail these out all together even though yours is already done. Hope you understand. I must respect the people that signed up and ship in that order

I thought I'd show you another project I am working on simultaneously to the Woodies. This is a target piece. I don't hunt!

I am not a vegetarian though and this is proof!

But man does not live by meat alone! My daughter is a vegetarian so I BBQ vegetables for her.

I wanted to show you the latest picture of the GGTB Chubby.

Original Chubby thread

I am getting lots of interest on these. These use a single 16340 and are really tiny

They are made from solid block, not veneer are very time consuming. Much more than the Woodie

Once the second batch of Woodies is done, maybe we can consider making up a few of these?

The Chubby is a special piece. It was inspired by Megyn Kelly, but that's another story for another time!!!

Looking amazing torque. I like how every woodie is different but all so sexy. I can't wait to have the ebony in my hands. Please keep up the hard work. We all appreciate it.

i would like to hear the story about how Megyn Kelly could inspire for the Chubby.
Once upon a time, Gretchen Carlson called in sick,,,

Hi folks.
We have a long week-end coming and I'm hoping to finish up the second batch. I received lots of requests for in process pictures so I thought I would publish some. This is part ot the finish process;

This is what a Woody looks like after the 5th coat of epoxy. If you look closely, you can see the surface imperfections on the epoxy. Thats ok, what I do is apply a series of light coats to have an even, top coat...

And then the surface is carefully sanded down like this. The finish is sanded evenly. At this point it looks dull but the surface is very smooth and even

I now begin to hand polish

Until the beauty of the grain comes out. Someone mass producing these things would simply hang them up and spray with polyurethane. This would look nice for a few months but the poly would be one coat and would soon scratch and flake off. Because the Woody's finish is made up of many coats of Epoxy and hand polished, it will a very long time, will be glass like smooth and the finish will be very deep. This is sort of how cars used to ge painted years ago as compare to new cars which have one coat of paint and one clearcoat top finish

This is the silver birdseye maple which has a greenish tinge. Don't know why the greenish color happens, the wood is silver when first applied. I think its a chemical reaction to the brass? All I know is the color is beautiful. The "crack" on the side is a normal inclusion or imperfection in the wood. This is what it looks like before I fill it. Later on this weekend I'll publish the finished surface with a before and after. Wood is a living thing, is warm to the touch and the more beautiful and stunning the grain is, the more "inclusions" it will have. Thats how nature made it!

Eventually, after 6-7 coats, with hand polishing in between coats, the finished product will look like this. The finish will be very durable and waterproof yet the natural grain will show through. This whole process requires many weeks of bonding and hand sanding, then coating time which requires weeks of drying in between but the end process will last a lifetime.

Finished product looks like this and every piece is unique because every single piece of wood is unique
