Speaking of which, anyone know what that black thing is next to the red soldering iron in the lower right of pic 2 (That silver stuff wrapped on it is just crappy, bundled lead-free solder that came with it)? It came with the iron and is made of some hard plastic/resin like stuff but I really don't know what it's for.
A parts pick. Its for holding/manipulating parts when you are soldering. As long as you don't hit it directly with a hot iron, it will hold a part, lead, wire, etc down, without pulling heat away. Hit it directly, and well, you need a new pick.
Sometimes you need to use a
device that actually will pull heat awy, but that ain't it.
