Uncle--I actually agree with everything you said. While I am appalled at the way people in the service industry are treated by some people, not everyone actually deserves a good tip. There are some people who simply shouldn't be in the service industry because they are unable/not willing to treat people well--not very smart when a good percentage of income is based on tips!

A penny face-up, IIRC, is worse than no tip at all. It's an indication of exceptionally bad service. Two pennies basically means the same thing--it's meant to show that the customer didn't just accidentally leave a penny on the table, but it was intentional.

Now, speaking of bad customer service, I'm off to the post office (my post office is really awful). I've had carriers lie and claim to attempt delivery when they didn't, in fact, make any attempt. For those who were following my drama yesterday, I'm expecting a very important package tomorrow--and I need to make sure that there are none of the games that they seem to play in my area!

Ive seen clue but dont quite recall it. Congo was trash.
he is very likeable.
you'll love hedwig, been trying to see it live for a few years and recently missed a traveling performance that came thru tucson.

I am not familiar with Hedwig, but after Googling it, I'm definitely going to have to check it out. :) I've been a fan of Rocky Horror for many years, especially Tim Curry's character. He's very talented. Did you ever see him in "Clue"?

 I find Rocky Horror to be more funny and campy than creepy, but to each his own. ;)
me too
NAE

LD, I agree that Congo was a very low point in his career. He was hilarious in 'Clue', funny in 'Home Alone 2' and scary in 'It'. He's much better suited and known for his stage presence, booming voice and exaggerated facial expressions.
It was good. Just read his bio a little, the stage appears to be his focus and he well suited for it.
he's gettin old, saw an all grey profile

Yeah, uncle, that "do you want change" thing is right up there...maddening/annoying/passive aggressive. It puts people on the spot in a very uncomfortable way.

YEP - And really not good or nice to do to ANYONE, but especially those who are on very limited incomes . . . BTW: I do not agree with the statement some people have made that, if they don't have enough to tip correctly - they shouldn't be going out to have something to eat - Jees that just takes :censored: . . . Why Not - They order what they can afford and leave what they can afford to tip wether or not it is the going percentage - They TIPPED ! ! !

#1 Morning all. I remember when I was a waitress, normally I would simply say " I will be right back" after they handed me payment. Most times the folks would just say No no, we're good.

Ducking.........(Sorry Uncle) I will say though I never asked if someone wanted change back, that really is over the line imo. aaahhh so many years ago.

Absolutely - No Reason to "DUCK" . . . That is what I learned to do and said. . . The Person waiting on the table is supposed to just take the payment and come back with the change if there is any . . . Then and only THEN - Wait till the patron leaves and then pick-up your tip - and defiantly Not before hand . . . BTW: "My" Aunt owned and ran a Bar/Resturant/Nightclub for over 50 years - she would have strung me up to say the least if I ever did anything different or worse demand/expected a TIP - it is suppose to be a Gratuity for a JOB WELL DONE - Nothing Else . . . AND - Not To Insure Proper Service in the Future as some think . . . Just Sayin' . . .;)

#4

Pretty sure it means they left a penny on the table and didn't think much about which side is up or down...so no difference to most of us :)

Ah - Then "You" missed out on the nuance of subtle communication from a patron to the Service professional - No matter what the Tip was . . . Penny "Heads-up" Good JOB and if it was a shinny NEW PENNY - YOU DID GREAT - So THANK YOU ! ! ! (Which usually came with a decent if not excellant tip) . . . AND - If the Penny was heads-down - WELL, "You" Get What I'm Saying . . . Worse was the penny faced down and No TIP ! ! ! . . . You - Without A Doubt - Got The Message . . . AND - ALL without them having to go to the Manager or Owner to complain about the service . . . BTW: Learned that from "My" Mother who also worked for a time as a "Copa Girl" way back when . . .

I tip pizza slaves well. especially those who work counter. few too people tip counter service employees, often they make the same hourly as the deliver driver with significantly less tips.
they also will make you pizza better when you call in next time if they remember you. the trick is to get them to remember you.
who doesnt like a better made Za?
delivery also gets better tip. people think $3 is standard for delivery regardless of order size, this is not true. (ive taken 2-300$ orders and gotten $3 tips). tip a driver better, yeah they got it easy, but so do you, you just had food delivered to your house

AH - But Now they charge for Delivering - anywhere from $2.00 to $6.00 (supposedly for gas and sometimes including the tip) . . . Some even as much as $10.00 which is supposed to include the Tip for EVERYONE . . . And - Although I wonder how much the driver actually gets or sees - I AM NOT TIPPING ANY EXTRA - when I am charged that much for deliveries (Not that I can get food delivered where I live now for the most part - very limited and I WILL NOT order Domino's/Poppa John's, etc. ) . . . Just Sayin' . . .;)

I used to be one of those people who dressed up and performed at the weekend showings of Rocky Horror. . . seems like a million years ago!

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is my favorite movie of all time. I also teach it nearly every semester. It's about to open on Broadway with Neil Patrick Harris as Hedwig, by the way.

YEP - That's right - 2 Pennies on the table and no other money was thought to mean: For "My" 2 Cents - The service "You" provide was worthless and you deserve - "NOTHING" . . .

Oh and See Previous post for explaination about Penny Tips . . . ^ ^ ^ ^

THAT - I would have liked to have seen . . .

Not a Fan of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch " - it was Ok, but nothing like "Rocky Horror" . . . But as was said by "thaya" - "To each [their] own" . . . ;)

Although - I wouldn't mind seeing a stage production, especially with Neil Patrick Harris in the title role - might be really improved . . . ;)

I can't say I'm completely on board with this, Uncle...
I've seen customers order extra this, extra that, waste most of it then stiff the server claiming they didn't have enough $$$...
I had a bar customer who regularly drank $40 in liquer then stiff saying he had 3 kids to feed...
I call BS on them and called the latter out on it (privately) explaining that tips are how we make a living and that our minimum wage was way less than normal min.

If you can't afford to tip, and I don't mean extravagantly, just a normal tip, spend a little less on extras.
Yes, you are supposed to tip for take-out at a restaurant...

In Ireland bartenders are VERY well paid, waiters and waitresses are paid fairly well. Here they make shyte and survive SOLEY on tips.
Not everyone can afford to be a "big tipper" and only an a**hat would expect that from everyone. But it is expected, that unless the service was awful, some tip is to be left.

I do completely agree with the bit about asking for the tip.
I ALWAYS told my customer "Thank you. I'll be right back with your change!"
I didn't ask for their money, I never used passive aggressive comments. I told them what I was doing and thanked them, before they tipped, for their patronage.

I made very good tips... :p

Now dealers are different. I dont mean drugs, i mean cards.
At the poker table a few months back, an elderly asian lady berated a friend of mine explaining that tipping after winning a hand is not a choice, it is an expected courtesy b/c the dealers make very little money.
this is untrue.
granted, i am generous, especially when winning, and always tip on a hand in which more than small blinds were raked.
but on a low stakes table, 2-4, the house rakes a min 7-8$ each hand. The pots are small (limit) and to spend 12$ on a hand, to win $8 and then tip $1-2 is not always easy to do when down monies.
Furthermore, dealers dont make $2.15; they are paid well, around $15-20 an hour at the local indian casinos. They make more than that in tips from the table each hour.
Inquiring about possible job openings at the casino (i dont even come close to qualifying....) dealers make an average of 60-75k in tucson.

......i still tip them
