Mist - Cool. Marquetry is time consuming. Got ANY idea on price range? I understand if you need to see a design before you quote any type of price, and I'd think you'd be crazy not to require that...
Would you entertain utilizing a customer's veneers? I have a design in mind that would be great with Carpathian Elm Burl, Maple, and Purpleheart. I think the Carpathian I have may already have adhesive on the backside. I have enough to send extra in case your, uhh, scrollsaw screws up
Thanks.
When I cut out the designs I stack veneers of all the species I'm using and cut them all at once. Then the pieces reassembled in different combinations so if I do a design like Jays, with 3 different veneers I get the same design in 3 different combinations. I'm thinkin' I'll offer some stock designs in different combinations for about $35.00 finished. If you want a one of a kind that would obviously cost more but I would either destroy the duplicates or ship them with the unit so you'd know someone wasn't going to get that design in a different combo. The price would depend on the number of different veneers and the complexity of the design. Again, there is a limit to the level of detail possible.
I'll set up a website and add designs as I come up with them for people to choose from. My daughter, the systems tech, is supposed to come out here on saturday and help me get the site up. I have an old site for my furniture,
Home , I'm planning on keeping the domain and building a new site to replace the old one. Information will be forthcoming.
As far as using a client's veneer, Gary, I would entertain the notion with the understanding that some woods bend more readily than others. I resaw most of my veneers from thicker pieces of wood and I've found that complex grains like the stuff around knots and burls in very hard species are sometimes problematic. If there is enough material to test bend a small strip I'd be game to try it but the time invested would have to be considered in the
end price. Iron on, adhesive backed veneer would most likely pose yet another issue. The steam has to penetrate the wood thoroughly in order to soften it enough for forming and then there's the issue with the epoxy I use to laminate.
I'm open for suggestions of "themes" for the designs if anyone has any ideas as to what they'd like to see. I have 12 years of art school behind me and I can draw.
If anyone actually read this whole post, thanks! As I figure out how to do all this I'll spread those conclusions out in an easier to read manner.
