Hey guys and gals, Kevin here.. so recently I've made the switch from a pack of smokes a day to vaping every day and I have loved it and love how my health is noticeably changing with me wanting to be more active, breathe and taste better. Anyways as with my changes from smoking to vaping I've had a lot of negative responses with me switching to vaping.. Keep in mind I am 18 (turn 19 this November) but as of current I'm living with my dad and step mom still for reasons that's a whole nother topic. They claim everything I'm vaping stinks (I vape fruity things, desert type things) when I can't smell a thing when I walk in and out of my room and my girlfriend comes over and can't smell anything either (even if you did smell those things how could jolly ranchers and vanilla smell freaking horrible?!) and claims it is also giving them a headache and stinking up our ENTIRE house. When I do vape indoors I always have a ceiling fan running and a little desk fan running with the window open in my room with the door shut, they must be exaggerating right?! They also tell me I'm not saving much money at all (I bought my Kbox mini kit and a Mutation X V4 RDA so I could see why they think it's so expensive) But my bottle of juices from MtBakerVapor are so cheap ($7.00 for a 30ml) and I don't even go through half a bottle of it a day so of course it's cheaper and money saving rather then throwing away $4.35 a day if not more on a pack of cigs. They also don't understand the whole sub-ohming thing and that's understandable.. but they often go as far as with all of that "smoke" (as they call it), you're inhaling it sure can't be any healthier than smoking a cigarette would be. Pure ignorance or am I missing something?

Anyways have you guys ran into this or had a similar problem as me? What do you do to stay motivated about making the switch to vaping, what do you say in return? Am I in the wrong here or what? I would've thought switching to a healthier habit would be supported by my family members but I suppose not.

VAPE ON, my friends.. and have a great rest of the day :D.

nope never ran into that.... but then again I do 36 nic, 3-5 ml a day depending on if I hit on my Velocity RBA... but, I havent had a cold since I started vaping ( 2.5 yrs ago) I dont get wheezy anymore, things taste better, but my ears ring alot more tho... and dogs make some nasty .... burps... ( sense of smell has increased dramatically)... if your up to it... Heathers Heavenly Vapes sells a juice called Nada... basically VG/PG ( your choice) and nic base, no flavors, no smells.... see if the parents say that stinks.. if they do then you will know they are just "vape haters"

I suggest that you find some posts here that talk about the positive changes experienced by people who have quit smoking by vaping. Print them out and let your parents read them.

It's very common for people to be ignorant about vaping.

Do they smoke? When they say that it smells worse than cigarette smoke, it tells me that they are just used to the smell of smoke. Not much smells worse than cigarette smoke except maybe cigar smoke.

If you previously smoked in your room, I can't see how this could possibly smell worse. If you didn't then it would be a good idea to vape where you smoked before and not in the house. Until you're living under your own roof, that may be the solution. Even though you and I know it is safer and not harmful to the people around you, it's their house.

Hmm seems interesting, that would be a great thing to try and see.. I just couldn't picture vaping something that's flavorless

Would you happen to have any links to send me in the right direction? They do smoke cigarettes, worst thing is my step mom has a little vision spinner 2 with a cruddy clearomizer tank on there and yet I still get hate lol.

Fair enough, I've been respecting the rules and what they ask of me as they wish since it's there house although I think in my head that it's a load of crap xD. Today I've been vaping in doors while no one was home and gave it a good 30 minutes to air out before they got home and they couldn't tell at all..

Look, I hear concerned stuff from my parents too. And I'm like 50. LOL

People who don't know anything about vaping, hear only scary things about vaping - in the "news".
They hear that it's dangerous, that is poisionous, that it's as bad as smoking. They hear that the government is trying to make it illegal, to "protect" us...

You need to slowly and calmly begin to educate them about it.

Start with the health benefits you mentioned - TELL them, "look - I can breath easier, and I am not going to get a smoker's cough". Alert them to the fact that there are MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of dollars being spent to ensure that they hear bad things about a good product - by pharmaceutical compannies (who want to "own" anything that can cure tobacco addiction) - by cigarette companies (who want to "own" anything that's replacing their cigarette sales - and by government (who wants to protect the stream of cigarette tax dollars).

Then get some science info from CASAA - they've got the articles that show the BS in the other articles that lie and make it sound harmful. They've got medical information that supports the idea that vaping is much much much less harmful, if harmful at all.

But still - it IS their house, so if the smell bothers them, keep taking measures to ensure they don't smell it much. If the education stuff works, they'll become less concerned about it, I'm sure...

It can be difficult for non-smokers to understand that vaping is much less harmful than cigs. Let's face it, smokers are viewed as the scourge of the earth and people seem to feel justified in telling smokers that. But your parents smoke and your stepmom vapes? I'm confused.

I smoked for over 30 years and haven't had a cig in almost 7 weeks thanks to vaping. It's tough when you live in your parents home however it does sound as though you're being respectful. Are you able to vape outside when they're home? That's what I do. My partner has never smoked so I always smoked cigs outside (and stomached dirty looks from my partner). I still vape outside because it's routine.

My partner doesn't understand my vaping nor feel happy that I haven't smoked a cig in almost 7 weeks. She just asks if I'm going to quit vaping (Noooo!).

Funny thing is there was a story on the news the other night which actually reported that vaping is much less harmful than smoking...a safer alternative. I've been telling her that all along. Since the news piece she hasn't said a word about my vaping. Interesting.

Just keep trying to educate your parents.

Good luck.

Cheers

As has been said, non-smokers often don't understand the harm reduction, but also don't understand how addicting nicotine can be. They are sometimes of the opinion that vaping is just substituting one "habit" for another (like smoking is a hobby) and cold turkey is the only way to quit.

Sounds like a case of their house their rules unfortunately. Either try to educate them like previously stated and if they still don't accept it just don't vape around them. My parents didn't care that I did it when I was at home but I also wasn't fogging up the house, I just kept the vaping in my room until they went to bed then I had the whole house to myself to blow clouds and make tornados and such :)

I am not one who is going to deny what another person experiences. I think it is wrong to do that. You are not them, your girlfriend is not them. Could they be lying? Sure. But could they be telling the truth? Sure. That, too.

There's a group of people who used to swim at my pool and they don't anymore. They said they feel somewhat ill afterwards, and there is more than one. It is possible that there is too much chlorine or something in the pool. About a year later, I ended up in the dermatologist's office, my skin was in pretty bad shape (very dry and scaling) and we did trace it to the time of year that I swim. It may not bother EVERYONE'S skin, but it does bother mine.

I just don't discount other people's experiences or sensory experiences just because I desperately want a different outcome. :)

My brother is pro vaping due to me, but I noticed that vaping in a closed space he coughs .....(he tries to hide it so it doens't look like he is having a problem with my vaping)......but he coughs. Obviously, the flavorings are bothering him.

Last year I placed a package of newly ordered eliquids in a friend's brand new car. We went into a restaurant to eat. When we came out to the closed up car, we both said "oh my". The ejuice flavoring had the entire new car smelling like bananas.

That's okay, if you love the smell of bananas. But she actually doesn't. :)

Hi! :)

I agree with Racehorse, if your parents don't like the smell, there's probably no words you can say that will immediately change this. Especially if it becomes a point of conflict, people tend to dig their heels in and become less receptive to reasonable discussion. If you remain respectful and avoid vaping in front of them, they will slowly get used to it.
