OMG Annette, how terrifying! You need a big, scary dog! Ugh, I was broken into once when I lived alone...my boyfriend moved in that very night ( and I married him).
Good grief, that's terribly upsetting. I will be praying for you, for safety, for wisdom about securing your home, and for some peace of mind and sleep. I'm glad you told us and so thankful you weren't home. (((big protective hug)))

Ugh, I've been holding this in for a few days, but I've got to let it out. My house was broken into several nights ago. Fortunately, I wasn't home at the time but the thieves cut the electricity and every piece of jewelry in my house was stolen along with some very special things that were given to me by my late father and grandmother. Worse, the sheriff who came to investigate told me that I should expect the likelihood of a return visit. There have been dozens of robberies in the area over the last couple of months and, in some cases, when people have been home at the time of the break in they have been tied up and beaten. I know several people who have been among the victims and one of them was beaten to the point that he had to have 70 stitches to put his scalp back together. This started in January but I guess I never really thought they would come to my house. I am so terribly shaken by this I am having a hard time sleeping at night. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers!

OMG Annette, I am so sorry to hear this happened to you and so very thankful that at least you were not home!!!! I'm sure it is hard to have that happen to you and to loose such precious things...my heart breaks for you my friend! ((((HUGS)))) I sure hope you are looking into a security system and a dog. If you do not feel safe there right now, maybe you could go stay at your sister's or a friends, until you can get some security installed? Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you and of course you know we are always here to listen!!!!!!

I just popped in to catch up, and say hi. Excited about my juice delivery today, can't wait to try some of the new flavors I got. Lemon chiffon smells amazing, as does the Lemon Rose water, Going bananas, White cho. rasp., I don't know what one to try first!
Annette I'm so sorry to hear about the break in, how terrifying. I'm thankful I live in a state that allows me to exercise my 2nd amendment rights. Not that it stops break ins, I sleep better knowing I can defend myself if needed. Aside from an alarm system, keep pepper spray on you and near your bed. Everyone (especially us women) should have a plan and scary as the thought may be, think about what you need to do if danger presents itself. Keep your cell phone handy, don't count on your land line - you may need to grab the phone on the move. Keep flash lights handy at your bedside, a big mag lite makes a good weapon as well - as does a baseball bat. I live in a region where home invasions are on the rise, so I have thought about these things often as I listen to the news reports of them happening all around me. Protect yourselves and stay safe, and be aware of your surroundings, no one should have to live in fear.

(((Annette))) I'm so sorry you had to go through that. It is just not right when your home is invaded by strangers. I am thankful you were not home and hurt. I agree with the above posts...get a security system, dog and if you have to stay with family until that happens, do it. They need to bring our troops back from the countries we have no right telling them how to live..and put them in our drug and gang areas to drive them out. These people have taken over because we are to busy in other places we don't belong...I will get off my soapbox now....

On a much happer note....hubby and I will be heading our tomorrow to babysit the grandkids..no better way to spend a weekend.

Oh Annette, I'm so sorry to hear about the break-in and your loss of irreplaceable belongings. Even though it could have been much worse, you have experienced a serious trauma. The suggestion to sleep elsewhere for a few nights is a good one. It's difficult to deal with stress when you're sleep deprived.

Praying that you'll be healed from this traumatic experience, be blessed with peace of mind AND will soon be able to sleep soundly again.

My husband and I experienced a home invasion in the middle of the night, back in 1979. That means that we were home when the intruder broke in. We weren't physically harmed, but it did do a number on us mentally and emotionally. I know what you're going through and my heart goes out to you.

Big hug to you!!!

Thank you so much to everyone for your support! I am definitely getting a security system and probably a dog, too. I have an armed man staying at my house right now as well, so I'm feeling much, much safer! I've gotten the house mostly cleaned up, power turned back on and I'm so happy it's the weekend as I just want to curl up in bed with a stuffed animal and watch movies, LOL! I think I'm going to start that now! I hope everyone has a great weekend, big hugs to all and good night!

I hesitated to mention arming yourself, knowing so many find it loathsome but I can't tell you how relieved I am to hear you have an armed guard for the moment. Having to take drastic measures to feel safe is unsettling in itself. Gloria is right, this is traumatic and will take some time for things to feel right again. :( You'll remain in my thoughts and prayers. I hope you have a soul-soothing weekend.

And in MUCH better news...
I just heard from my sister, and the two kitties and the mama are just fine. :) There is a vet that runs a wellness clinic on Saturdays for low-income kitties so she took them there. The mama kitty's lungs were clear and vet said the mama's wheezing was from our warm winter, making allergy season much worse than usual and he's seeing a lot of wheezing cats. She has a mild heart murmur but not enough for great concern. The babies are healthy but the little girl is a little behind so they're supplementing her with kitten formula. Mama was rabies vaxed and will be spayed in a month. :) If all continues well, I think I'm going to adopt the little girl :)

Good morning! Wow, I slept for nearly 12 hours last night finally and am starting to feel like myself again! :) Kitty, I am considering getting a gun. It scares me and isn't something I would have considered before but the reality is I live in a big, rural county and the sheriff said response times can be 25 to 30 minutes to my area. I live alone and my closest neighbor is a long way away. Even a dog may not be enough as dogs have been poisoned during several of these break ins (it makes me so mad that someone would poison a dog, grrr!). I am getting a lot of good advice from friends and the sheriff so I know I will come to something so that I can feel safe here again. Thank you to everyone again for your support. It really comforted me and meant so much to my heart to hear from everyone here! And Kitty, I'm so happy to hear you will still be getting a Kitty Junior for your house after all!

Glad you got a good nights sleep Annette and although I did not respond earlier, I have been praying for your protection and that those ......s will be caught. I am so sorry that your home was violated. Glad to see you have an armed friend so you could get some rest. Go for a shot gun with a loud bolt action!

Making the decision to own a gun can be scary - the way to over come the fear and be sure of your decision is proper training, and practice. More and more women are making the decision to own a firearm, there is a lot of information out there. Pick up a copy of (or if you have a kindle/nook you can get it too) a book called "The cornered cat". An excellent book written by a woman for women on firearms,(she has a website as well corneredcat.com). I know there are many out there who do not believe in gun ownership, but the reality is, we are responsible for our own safety, the police cannot always get there in time. Dogs are great, but it takes time to train one and they will be the first target in a break in, what do you do next. Guns are not as scary once you understand how they work, how to handle them safely. You may be surprised at how enjoyable shooting is, I love spending the day at the range with my husband, it's a sport we both really enjoy. If you need encouragement or advice Annette, feel free to contact me.

Thank you, Minx! I just ordered the book you recommended. The sheriff's department here also offers a several day training course that a few friends have taken so I'm considering going to the next one to see how I feel. I'm nervous about it, but I don't want to feel the way I have at night this week ANY MORE! With the sheriff response time at 30 minutes, my nearest neighbor over a quarter of a mile away and people getting tied up and beaten in their homes here, I am really willing to get over my fears about it and see if it's something I can become comfortable with. I have quite a few friends that are very knowledgeable and competent with guns, so I'm getting a lot of offers to go to the range and give it a try and I think I'm going to go for it! Thank you for the support and encouragement!

Good for you for considering the training! It is the best way to go. I started shooting with my husband about 15 years ago- simply because he had guns in the house and I needed to be comfortable with it (he's a Marine so, him not having them was not an option). Although I was good with "shooting" them, and he was a great teacher, I didn't become really comfortable until I made the decision to take a training course. I will be taking another course in a few weeks that is just for women, so it should be fun. I'm glad you got the book too, I got a lot of insight when I read it.
