Wow! I lurked at ECF for nearly a YEAR before joining. I could read everything. Just couldn't respond. I started vaping in 2011, but went to a different forum. I was a little intimidated by ECF due to it's huge size. I was also worried about "fitting in" here. When the forum I used to go to changed and wasn't so much fun anymore...I came here last August. Glad I did! Even though by then I was no longer a "newb" I have learned a lot here...and gotten some great tips and coupons and ideas!

My Google Search Question Lead me to this Forum..... Since you can't read the answer unless you "register" as a member, I went through all of that and finally got to the page I needed...... Only to find a bunch of people "bragging" about not smoking anymore or others "cheering" them on. I am interested in starting the process of quitting, after smoking for 40 years. However, here is yet another website that wants to just collect everyone's personal information and then doesn't deliver on the information they "claim to possess". Thanks............................................. :(

My Google Search Question Lead me to this Forum.....
Likely - google sees a lot from ECF

Since you can't read the answer unless you "register" as a member,
Not true - ECF is open for reading

Unlikely unless you were searching for a Show me your*** page

I am interested in starting the process of quitting, after smoking for 40 years.
Then you should put forth the effort rather than be rude to those that are willing to aid in any reasonable way.

However, here is yet another website that wants to just collect everyone's personal information
ECF has a standard registration same as most forums with minimal information requested/required - actually far less than some I have joined.

and then doesn't deliver on the information they "claim to possess".
Almost anything you would like to know on the subject can be found here - ASK and be enlightened.

Thanks.............................................
You are quite welcome! :D

i've been doing nothing but reading info, chatting, shopping/researching based on info from this forum since saturday night when i found it via a google search question.
There is more information available here than one could possibly digest in a reasonable (even an unreasonable!) amount of time/web usage.
I didn't have to register but i did...so i could interact (the point of a forum).
i haven't gotten any spam, been sold to a harem, or won publishers clearinghouse (dammit!)

I hope you find your way back to read this.....i smoked for 30ish years....i got my e-cig set up on saturday night and have smoked an entire 2 analog cigarettes since then...and that was sat-sun afternoon...none yesterday/today. (which is a downright miracle...especially since i wasn't even consciously planning on quitting...i was just going to e-cig when i couldn't cig)

check the new members forum - there are sticky topics at the top
read, read, read
ask, ask, ask, ask questions...

there are tons of ways to get started to quit...cigalikes, disposable, tank, clearo/carto etc etc (see how much i have learned here?!)...

good luck!

I hope the OP doesn't use this experience as an excuse to keep smoking...
hate to disagree with you my vaping friend. but i think big tobacco, and the FDA need to keep some of their clients. OP sounds like the perfect candidate to say vaping wasn't for him/her, and fall back into familiar habits. someone has to pay sin taxes to the govt. i nominate OP:toast:

what experience? registering for a website that shows ppl successful and being supported at what the OP says they want to achieve? :D

sometimes ppl lash out at those that have accomplished what they think they "should" do but don't really want to do....

Great, I came to this forum to specifically answer your question.
I finally found your post and find that all you are doing is complaining and not asking a question at all.

This restaurant sucks. I've been sitting here 5 minutes and they haven't brought me a thing to eat. What's wrong with them?

I meant along the lines of some of my friends:

It's too expensive
I don't have time right now
How do you know vapor won't make you sick?
I don't want to use nicotine, that's not quitting
Forums just want your personal information
All I read are people bragging about how long they've been tobacco-free, I want this to be about me
I don't want to learn all that complicated stuff
I want excuses to stay just the way I am...

This person was clearly annoyed, but they weren't really rude.

And you're missing that they have a point (perhaps understandably, though you could have logged out to check, and surely remember the 'You are not logged in' notice from this or other forums - they're almost all based on the same few systems...). You cant access users' profiles unless you're logged in. You can't access links to uploaded, rather than inline, images. Sometimes these images contain the substantive information in a post - e.g. a diagram or graph.

The OP may not realise that the profiles don't normally contain much of use. They may also not realise that there may be legitimate reasons for requiring registration, with a valid email address, before allowing access to uploaded images - I'd guess to prevent hotlinking, or other excess bandwidth uses, but I don't really know. I'm going to assume the site is big enough to not need to be collecting email addresses for dubious marketing purposes, but again, a non-techy person unfamiliar with the net (as someone who's been smoking for 40 years may well be) might well not know that.

So, sorry if this comes off as rude. I just think you should probably remember that a lot of people who end up here may be at the end of their tether - stressed, sick, and desperate. You should probably assume good faith if you want to represent the e-smoking community in good light, and if you don't, why are you replying to threads in the beginners section in the first place..?

Yeah, sounds like OP isn't very internet savvy & got frustrated & overwhelmed. It's much better to lurk here for a good while before registering. The amount of information is overwhelming to the point of intimidation, particularly when you're just starting. It wasn't this site that got me interested in vaping. It was a few other smaller forums with off-topic areas that had discussions about it. I remember the first time I surfed here, at the recommendation of friends on other forums, I practically hyerventillated....had to wait a week before I even tried to come back & ended up lurking for a good two months before I was brave enough to register & start posting. The guys at adventurerider.com, troutunlimited.com & gapacking.com were the ones that helped me get my starter kit. The people & info here was WAY too over-my head.

Arielsue, sorry your first experience was not positive. I hope you come back & now that you are registered, post a question regarding the specific information you're looking for (but I'd recommend starting a new thread). I can guarantee you'll get answers, but we'll probably cheer you on too.
