Got a box mod but still kind of new at this, got some ohm questions

Hello all, I recently, a little over a month ago, got into vaping, haven't had a cigarette since I got one. I started with a vision spinner 2 and a couple of kanger t3s tanks, worked great for a while, until I saw the massive clouds you could get with bigger devices, so I decided to step up and grabbed a GI2 clone and an IGO W4 RDA. So far it seems like it is way more powerful and will be able to do what I want but it's extremely harsh and gets hot rather quickly. According to the GI2 it's coming in at .16 ohms, now the first coils were built at the store, wrapped around a 3/32 drill bit with 7 wraps, 24 gauge kanthall wire, dual coils. Now granted, I asked for something that would make huge clouds so I'm guessing that's why they went sub ohm with my build but I'm thinking it might be too low for my tastes. How would I go about getting anywhere between 1.0 and 1.5 ohms? I know that nicotine levels can add harshness but I'm using cereal killa which is 90/10 and .4% nicotine and even that hurts at these ohms, Any help I could get would be great.

Not sure who made your clone but the chip in all the ones I've seen are to be used with resistances of .2 to 3.0, at .16 you're below the design spec. If it was me I wouldn't use it until taken back to the shop and have them change the coils out to something more reasonable. And the air flow on that RDA really isn't setup for high wattage unless the air holes have be drilled out.

They did drill out the holes to 3/32, kind of big but the draw is ok I guess. I'm not all that worried about bringing it back as I can just rebuild the coils myself with a little bit of help from here. The first shop I went to sold me the wrong size cartridges for my T3S tanks, they were slightly too big, so I was just pulling the coils from the new ones and putting them in the used ones I had, worked great, so rebuilding coils shouldn't be an issue for me just need to know how I would go about getting anywhere between a 1.0 and 1.5 ohm setup. I'm figuring that should be a decent place for me to start and then I can decide if I want to move up or down from there.

If by GI2 clone you're talking about a 100w regulated box mod....have you turned down the watts?

I run my Sigelei 100w anywhere from 35w (for less dripping while driving since a wet deck lasts longer at lower watts) to about 80w. Anything from 50-80w blows huge clouds. I'm running a dual parallel 28g build at .3ohm.

If you were talking about a .16 build on a mechanical then you'd have to change the build to cool it down if it was too much for you. With a regulated mod, just turn down the device until you find your sweetspot.

Oops, didn't mean to post in the wrong place, my bad. Anyway, I'm gettin the hang of it, turning it way down helped a lot with my flavors that have nic. I tried a 0% and 100% VG and it hit like a champ on the highest setting with barely any harshness in my throat so I'm figurin I just have to find the right juices for regular vaping and cloud chasing. Playing with it I'm liking it more and more but I'm still thinking I wouldn't mind seeing what different ohms would feel like but so far I only know what was built into it at the shop. It still gets pretty hot but I'm guessing that comes with vaping. Still wouldn't mind trying different ohms though so any help in the coil wrapping area would be great.

0.16 is pretty low, thats like a cloud competition build, I definitely wouldn't recommend something like that for someone newer to vaping and sub ohm'ing.

Anywhere from 0.3-0.6 would probably tone it down just enough to a more comfortable vape. But as someone else mentioned, with the power of your GI2, you don't even need to go sub-ohm to get great flavor and clouds.

If you're still using 24 guage, dual 7 wrap coils around a 3mm drill bit/screwdriver would bring it up to about 0.3.

If you want to go higher, I'd recommend jumping back up to 26/28 gauge kanthal, otherwise it would take a ridiculous amount of wraps to get to 1ohm if you're keeping a dual coil setup.

You should try wrapping a higher ohm coil. With a 100 watt regulated mod, you don't really need a sub-ohm coil to get good flavor and clouds - just up the watts. Read this post - it's kind of long, but contains some good info on why you don't really need to sub-ohm with a high watt regulated mod.

My thoughts about sub-ohm and latest VV/VW devices...

Edit: ...and welcome!

Hmm, link doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm getting a feel for it but it's still pretty powerful, I vape at 1.8 to 2.2v and 20 to 30 watts. Definitely gonna want to bump the ohms up to around .8 to 1 ohm, just gotta do more research and figure out what gauge and how many wraps I need.

The whole part of going sub ohm, was so mechanical mods could use more wattage. In a mechanical mod, you must adhere to ohms law since you're creating a very basic circuit. a .2 ohm is using 88 watts, 4.2 volts of power on a mechanical... but guess what.. you're not limited to the 4.2 volts any more. You can go up to 5.5 volts. So, you might want to try going up on the ohms, and crank up the power. Also, airflow is the king. make sure you have huge bores for the air to pass over the coils... that is critical, or you'll end up scorching your tongue, getting the atomizer hot, and not getting a lot of vapor in the end.

Again, try going up in gauge. I am still waiting for a dripper that can handle my Sigeli 100w to come through the mail. When I do, I'm going to try some 26 gauge wire, at a .8 ohm dual coil setup. Then I'll judge from there. The only thing I don't like about a lower gauge wire, is the thicker it is, the longer it takes to cool down/heat up.
