Got my first vape! Few questions

Finally got my kanger evod thanks to some help from you guys on what to get! I love this thing already! Couple questions. I've noticed a little build up on the side of the coil, is that normal? Should I just clean it off occasionally? Once I finish juice and go to refill should I clean out the tank or is it fine if I'm using the same juice? Again thanks to everyone who helped me pick out the evod! I love it already!

Build up is normal, especially with sweet/dark juices. Generally, when the coils get totally gunked up on a non rebuildable device it's time to throw it away and put in a new coil, there isn't really any way to safely clean them, as dry firing will burn up your wick and make everything taste bad, and touching them often leads to breaking them which means they stop working at all. No need to clean your tank, not even when switching juice flavors, unless you just really, really don't want any trace of the old flavor hanging around.

Here is a solid video regarding coils and cleaning. The only thing I would do different is to remove the coil completely and only rinse it with distilled water. Less in the water to oxidize on the coil with etc. Otherwise dryburning should remove the crud and alleviate some issues you may run into. Note that dry burning Kanger Coils is not an issue as they use silica which does NOT Burn.

For something like you have, I like to Flush it out with Hot Tap Water at Every Refill. Or about Every Refill if I forget.

I Flush, Shake out the Excess Water, Blow Out any Water in the Center Tube, then Refill.

The First Couple of Hits will be kinda Weak. Do to the Water on the Wick. But after a Few Hits, you should be Back in Business.

Dry burning will not burn the wicks if you are using the original silica wicks that are installed in the EVOD heads. The only thing you could possibly burn would be the insulators in the coil head. Silica cannot burn at the temperatures we vape at - take a piece and hold it in a cigarette lighter flame - it won't burn.

When I used EVODs, I would do a dry burn every week or so (depending on the juice I was using) This allowed me to get about 4-6 weeks from each coil head. The most important part of dry burning is to do it in pulses and allow it to cool between burns. The final rinse after the coil glows red is also very important.

As for cleaning, absolutely yes - clean it. With even just a quick rinse under hot running water every 2-4 refills, your equipment will last longer and your vape will taste better.

wow, even after all this time I didn't know that. Learn something new every day. I have a new respect for silica.

This is the coil correct? This is the buildup I'm talking about. Just want to be sure. There's a lot to learn in vaping from what I can tell! Thanks for the replies!

Well, yes, kind of. If you grab hold of that chimney piece sticking up and unscrew it the entire "coil piece" with come out. To dry burn your coil, you do that first. Then remove the silicon gasket thing (off=white) on it. Hold the bottom piece with a one hand and wiggle the chimney back and forth. It will come loose. Look down into the piece where the chimney was and you should see some wicking material. Depending on the juice you are using it might be very dark color. With tweezers remove the wick on top (called flavor wicks). you should then see a very small wire coil. Again, it may be very dark. That is the actual coil that provides the heat.

Now, pulse your power button a few times. You should see some vapor coming off the coil and it may smell like something burning. Do that a few times until you see the coil glowing from the inside toward the outer edges.

The flavor wicks you took out can be rolled in one direction (if you roll it back and forth it will come apart) along a paper towel to clean them.

put everything back together and you have "dry burned" you coil.

If you are like me, you will understand it better by watching a video showing the procedure. I found this one on YouTube, but there are tons more:

It really is easy and painless.

Good luck!

ETA: If you buy new coils, you just unscrew the part you are showing in the photo and screw in a new one.

Glad to hear they made such a huge improvement since I used disposable heads last in the Vivi Novas. Back then dry burning would cause filament to cut through the silicone positive isolator. If it cut all the way you had a ruined shorted head, and if it didn't you had one that made everything taste like melted, burned plastic.

The heads in the vivis were a little more tricky to dry burn for sure. I could sometimes get them to taste OK but I think it was more of a lottery rather than good technique on my part. Don't tell anyone but I sometimes get my vivis out and use them, just because I can (and I bought about a bazillion spare heads when I first started out)

I liked my Vivi Novas, and they're what I learned to rebuild on, so I have no bad memories of them. Also, tipping them to keep the wicks wet made me perfectly prepared for genesis style atomizers. :) But I got tired of paying for new heads real quick with them, which I'll admit pressured me to learn about rebuilding and was a good thing in the end. At the time, I remember thinking it was a major PITA. Now a days I feel like I'm getting old school when I use one of my genesis tanks. I admit I haven't actually busted out one of my Vivi Novas in a long time.
