Got my new SID.... doesn't fire.

So I got my new mod today, the SmokTech SID, hoping to kick analogs and start vaping once again.

I unpacked it, tossed in a freshly charged UltraFire 18650, and was greeted with "smok" on the display. Looks good. I press the fire button three times to enter the menu, can see all the options as expected - resistance at 1.4 ohms on a LR 1.5 ohm atty, battery shows 4.1v on a 3.7v 18650.... ok. Everything looks good so far. Let's go ahead and start vaping!

Hit the fire button, and get nothing. It flashes the resistance on the display very briefly, and then it goes blank. No vapor from the two atty's and the clearo I tried on it. Pressing the fire button again doesn't do anything, it doesn't display the resistance nor can I enter the menu again. I have to pull the battery and reset the entire unit just to be able to access the menu again. I had tried two different UltraFire batteries, two atty's, and a clearo, and get the exact same results with every combination of the above.

I'm thinking I got a dud. Has anyone else encountered anything similar with the SID or one of the vv / vw Max's?

I have an SID and Ive never had quite the issues you have, but whats the clero your using? Ive noticed that the evod wont make contact with the center piece unless you pull it up a bit. When you fire the SID it'll act like its working even if the center pin isnt making contact you just wont get any vape. Try another clearo or if you dont have anymore gently pull up on the center pin... gently.

I had tried it with two Cisco atty's and the iClear 30. I had also tried it without anything attached. It's not delivering any power, as the display just flashes on for a fraction of a second before cutting out. After that I have to pull the battery to get any reaction from the mod again.

No matter what combination I've tried, I've had the same results. I tried this with two UltraFire 18650's, and think they may be the issue. I've got some Panny batteries on the way, and am hoping this will take care of it.

If it turns out to be the SID itself, at least I'll have some cool new batteries for it when I get a working mod

It does sound like a battery issue, I have heard that the ultra fires are not so good.

Fingers crossed your panny`s will solve it.

Are your UltraFire 18650's protected?? Could cause that issue.

Yes, they're protected. Although I've heard a number of different people with both protected an unprotected batteries working with these vv / vw mods.

It makes me even more curious if these Panny's would be best suited for this type of mod:

The latter ones say protected, but I have read reviews that they work great for vv / vw mods, and they come highly recommended from a lot of people in the community who are much more knowledgeable than I.

Most VV/VW PV's Do Not Like Protected batteries. It messes with the built-in protection circuits and cuts off. I use the NCR18650A versions of the Panasonic in my Vamo and in the wife's evic with no problems. I believe most people think the Panasonic CGR18650CH is an even better option.. which I use also.

So I resolved the "protected battery" issue

Just remove the plastic wrap and the pcb, and now one of my UltraFire's is technically no longer protected. The SID is working great now!

This is definitely not a long-term solution, but it did let me find out that the issue was in the batteries and not the mod itself. I am so relived I can start vaping now! This mod mod will at least allow me to start vaping and order the unprotected Panny batteries and a quality charger from FastTech without having to wait another week without vaping.

Wouldnt removing the wrapper leave the battery susceptable to shorting out through the tube? Or is there another wrapper underneath?

No, there definitely is a chance, but I don't see it being that great. The entire battery housing is basically the negative battery post. The little button on top is the only place the positive contact is made. So in theory, the connection the battery makes at the positive terminal should offset it from the metal housing enough that it would take some serious mistreatment / physical damage in order to get the positive button top to contact the metal tube.

I was also using these batteries in the headlight for my bike, which is an unprotected device. I took them out anytime I wasn't using them to minimize any chances of shorting.

It's been great so far. I don't have anything negative to say about it whatsoever. It's been perfectly stable now that I got a set of Panasonic batteries.

On a small tangent, it looks sleek enough that I don't feel out of place using it in any environment. While the guys I work with on a regular basis wouldn't mind me sticking something that looks like a light saber in my face, other apv's or mods may be a bit much in certain circles.

The slow boat from china came in today, and I have light sabre in my hands! Popped a battery in it, and it fired right up!
Now I'm no longer worried about having to recharge my Ctwists all the time!

So far, so good!

It does feel fairly hefty, and nice and solid. The battery doesn't rattle in it at all, and the pro-tank looks good on it. Only issue I can think of is that it seems to ride higher in my shirt pocket and feels a little unsteady. I might have to get an lanyard, I really don't want this thing hitting the floor!
