IMO, the sterile cotton tastes like band-aids smell and I'd get a little scratchy throat from it. Sterile means germ free but not chemical free.
I use this Pure Cotton - Koh Gen Do | Sephora
For me, it has no taste of it's own (before or after). It's a little more robust than clinical cotton and lasts a little longer. I don't boil it. Been very pleased with it. YMMV.
I've been vaping micro coils with cotton exclusively for quite a while now, but my boss got a spool of xc-116 so I decided to play a bit with that.
Still too early to say I'm a true convert, but so far this stuff is awesome.
My only gripe with cotton is how easy it is too forget to squonk while driving and singe the wick. A little bit of burnt cotton leaves A LOT of bad taste in my mouth.
With the ceramic, I just inserted a paper clip in the hollow and wrapped as close to micro as I could get freehand.
Flavor is on par with cotton, maybe a little more pronounced with the sweet notes, and no fear of burning the wick.
Pics to follow; just figured I'd shine some light on this for op if he can't get cotton working correctly. I never experienced the wet sock flavor, but palates vary greatly.
As to why I quoted tree: I got some of those koh gen do pads on the way for when I get the urge to play with recoiling again.
Blah, blah, blah... pics as promised:

Let me know what you think after you've tried it. And don't mind the tiny little dark bits in the cotton...its organic.![]()

Thanks Tree!
Got the Koh Gen Do a few days ago and I must say it is the best wick I have tried which includes CVS sterile, CVS & Walgreens cotton balls, several hemps, XC, silica, and of course SS mesh.

i smoked 40 a day for 30 years so i don't really give a stuff about a bit of silica. it lasts ages longer than cotton, and it was only 100 years ago that people working with cotton fibers in the air had lung problems from that too as they weaved with it.
Nothing made from fibres will not disintegrate at some point - ever clean the air filter on a tumble dryer? You can also stop that silica flying about if you blowtorch it a bit- then it cuts really cleanly. But it's no worse than anything else.

I just got mine today and wanted to say thank you for the info. It is my favorite wick yet.
I'd been using CVS sterile rolled cotton till now. I also got CVS sterile cotton balls, some kind of organic cotton balls, some silica in three different sizes, and I ordered xc116 (I think that's the name/number for the ceramic?) on Friday.
I've only been doing this for a month now, so I am hoping I slow down on the "gotta have it" syndrome that seems to have come with my reo. If I keep this up, I will live longer and with way less money cause I stopped smoking.
If you can't tell, it was a long day and I'm tired lol.
I will let you know how I feel about the kgd pads when they've arrived.
I did try some hemp sliver last night, but didn't much care for it. I boiled it 4 times until the water was crystal clear, but it still imparted its own flavor. I may try again some day cuz I have a ....-ton of it, but first impression is less than good...

There is also a small consideration of time. I typically do all my recoiling at the weekend, but not usually at a time of my choosing. Like today, i decide i am going to recoil one of my RM2s and HRH drops 3 of hers on me for the same treatment as she wafts out the door to go shopping!
Messing about boiling things, making little sausages out of them is all well and good and lasts oooh, a day - but when you mix R41 wire, or Mr Mundy's wire in with it - it becomes a lot more onerous on a stock RM2, which is why i use the DZ jig and my fat silica.
How are you planning to hold this tumbledryer lint together?

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on KGD, oh delicious pastry.![]()
I'm torn when it comes to Koh Gen Do cotton versus CVS sterile rolled cotton.
The Koh Gen Do (KGD) is denser and easier to work with, especially if you are making long thin wicks for applications like the Kayfun or Prometey. You can cut the exact size and shape you want, and it all stays together when you install it. However, one reason KGD is the go-to cotton pad for makeup removal (other than the chemical free aspect) is that it does not absorb as readily as standard cotton. This property makes it last longer and function better for facial cleansing and lotion applications. But in vaping, that's not necessarily a good thing. I think I prefer the way standard cotton absorbs - I can get more drops of juice into my wick with CVS cotton - the KGD takes in less, and the rest pools on the deck, which can potentially drown the coil a bit depending on your atty/build.
Also, I do notice a different taste with KGD - I may be more sensitive to flavor nuances than others though, so this may not be an issue for you. It's not a pleasant taste in my opinion... I have not tried boiling it yet. I may do that and report back - perhaps the boiling process will also impact the absorption factor.
Just got it the other day and forgot to post my thoughts. So far, sorry to say, I'm not all that impressed.
The convenience factor is nice, but I'm not noticing much if any difference between the kgd pads and the sterile rolled I got from rite aid.
It's good stuff, I just can't justify the price when compared to sterile rolled or even the boiled p&c yarn I've used. I'm only about two wicks in so far, so I'll save my final judgement until I've given it more time to shine.
