Greetings, made an account after several weeks of lurking!

Hello everyone, thought I'd check in officially as I've been hovering around in the shadows here for a month or so since quitting smoking (after 15yrs ish on analogs). I got some entry-level vape gear to try as a nic-replacement having had numerous failures with patches/gum etc. in the past.

I'm from the northern wilds in the UK and I don't know anyone socially who's into vaping so I'm very much feeling my way blind here. I hope I don't make any horrific faux-pas.

I started out a month ago with an Apollo Endeavor starter kit with two EVOD style pens which I found were great as both a chemical and psychological replacement during the critical first few days/weeks of kicking the analogs. Really enjoyed the process of filling, trying new flavours etc. They helped me over the hurdle I usually fall at when quitting - the first drunken night out after stopping smoking. I have sketchy willpower at the best of times, and when I'm half cut it's non-existent. But with the pen in my pocket I managed to get through without cracking, despite my mates having a good old laugh at me emitting clouds of mango vapour while they choked down their Lambert and Butlers.

After a few weeks using the EVODs and watching/reading a fair bit of vaping media I started to feel like I wanted something a bit more special for my home vaping. Something a bit chunkier and posher to grind while watching TV and relaxing. The EVODs are perfect when out and about, but I basically wanted a lightsabre for home. I liked the quality and service I got from Apollo so I went ahead and ordered the V-tube 3.0 (I'll get slated for this probs - I know they aren't the cheapest for what they are, but stick with what you know right?).

So here's my gear now:

Got the V-tube this morning with a couple protank 3s. I'm a bit concerned though because I tested it with some RY4 which I've never tried. To me it's tasting a bit gnarly (sort of almost burny and sickly, despite being careful with my voltage). I've read that RY4 polarizes people into a love/hate divide, but I wish I'd tested my tube on something I was familiar with so I didn't feel like it was the device making the weird taste. I also think maybe the steel mouthpiece takes some getting used to after a month of plastic.

Having said that though, it's growing on me as the night wears on (and the wine depletes).

Anyway, I've rambled on for ages, nice to be here and hope to speak to some of you soon.

Yeah, testing something you're familiar with is the way to go! You could have a bad variant, but RY4 tasting burnt doesn't sound like any that I've tried. Is the juice in a different PG/VG ratio? You might also try taking primer puffs (sucking without firing) and shorter draws and seeing if that helps narrow it down.

Thanks batman! It's not quite a 'burnt' taste I got with the RY4, it's hard to describe but it's somewhere close to burnt but not quite, kind of like the sugar on top of a creme brulee that's been caramelised with a blowtorch (damn it's hard to describe tastes!). It seemed to mellow as the clearo depleted and I've since filled it with a fruit juice to compare and that tastes great. Maybe RY4 isn't for me or, like you said, maybe it was a dodgy batch. I'm going to steep the rest of it for a couple weeks and then give it another chance,

Thanks again for the input :thumb:

I have one bottle of RY4 and add other things to it so I can finish it off. Sweetener, caramel, vanilla custard, coconut, ect. Takes time to find your favorite juice. Then the sweet spot on temp. Took me weeks to break in my Kayfun. Hated it at first. Some juice is better in it than others.

Thanks for the tip, I might just try combing it. I haven't got around to any mixing yet but it sounds like fun! I know people change what they vape constantly but I've been surprised by how much my own tastes have evolved in a month.

When I started out I was mostly into the danker, darker 'cafe' flavours like coffee and vanilla - the fruity ones just didn't seem to satisfy my craving to smoke, perhaps because the flavour was too much of a departure from that grey, savoury taste of smoking. As the weeks went by, I stopped hankering after the taste of analog cigs, and the cafe flavours started to make me feel a bit sketchy and nauseous (having read up on the side-effects switching from analogs to e-cigs though, I realise now these symptoms may have been caused by the chemical transitions associated with quitting smoking).

When I first ordered my starter kit, I got some 'Simply Tobacco' juice because I thought it'd trick me into thinking I was smoking and that would be that. It was billed as 'the closest taste to a real cigarette', but oh my god that stuff was awful. It tasted like the smell of a hamster cage that hasn't been cleaned out for weeks. That .... went in the bin because I could smell it in my room even with the clearo washed out and the juice bottle stashed at the back of a drawer.

My ADV at the moment is Mango Peach, I can't get enough of it. I noticed I'm vaping so much more juice on the mod than I was on the Endeavor pens. I've chugged more than 5ml just today, so I need to put the brakes on a bit haha.

Aha, I think that's common to think you want a tobacco just like you're used to and then realize just how bad what you were taking in tasted like when your brain isn't being humped by the nicotine telling you this is what you what you want. Depending on the RY4 you got, it may simply need more steeping time. Is it kind of a peppery taste, that you might be interpreting as burnt or something you can't quite place? If so, tobacco's especially, if the juice is raw, can benefit from steeping as you're tasting less of the flavor and more of the nicotine.

In your excitement to reply to me (I don't blame you), you didn't say what your PG/VG ratio was. I would not be at all surprised if it's higher in VG and hence not wicking as it should be as that'd still be where I'd look first. A search for burnt in the forums should give some clues about ruling that out or solving it.

Sorry DB! I'm still using up the Apollo juice that I ordered along with my starter kits. The ratio is 60/40 PG/VG - I have no idea if that's standard or what.

Regarding the burnt taste, I'm not getting it anymore now I'm running a berry flavour so I guess that narrows it down to the RY4 and not fried coils or anything. I'll steep the RY4 and go back to it at some point when my mod is properly 'run in', and see if I get it again. :)
