ad356, I have a friend that runs very much along those lines. He has serious health issues, and as a co-worker has asked me about vaping for some time. I volunteered to get him set up with a decent setup (Lavatube, 5 cartos, 2 batterys/charger/30 ml of juice for my cost. He agreed, I ordered stuff. A week later he comes by proudly displaying me his $5.99 mini, and says that "each cartridge of this lasts as long as a carton. Does yours?". I was mildly peeved, and the first thing I said was that I hope he didn't get signed up for his "monthly allowance" of their proprietary carts.
A week later, he is mad, saying that they hit his credit card for $99, for a few boxes of carts. He was able to eventually get it all returned. He loves the LT, and has spent a month smoke-free.
There's a lot of things to the smoking addiction (seems like I am saying this a lot here, lately), the physical addiction to nic/chemicals, the ritual, the taste, the visible vapor. Different parts of this have different holds on different people. While we all know that the minis are short-lived and expensive, when you are new, you are easily self-conscious about vaping, and using a mini doesn't make you stand out as much.
Once I got a few months in, looking like I was pretending to smoke was the last thing I wanted to do.
Stick by your friend ad356, he needs help. Yes he made a poor first choice, but the best device is one that lets us quit smoking. There are certainly better devices (there usually always is), but once you stop smoking a while, you can afford any device that you want.
