Harsh cotton taste

I have a yep dark shadow box mod with a patriot rda. I am not new.to vaping but am new to dripping having just switched from a kangertech turbo atomizer tank. I buy pre built .5 ohm coils from my local vape shop. I use koga Japanese cotton sheets also from my local vape shop. I have had a few good wicks but majority taste like cotton after 5 or so puffs unless HEAVILY saturated with juice. I am looking for tip on wicking methods or materials to help solve this.

The Patriot is relatively old style... pre deep drip well.

I'm not surprised you get only 5 good draws, especially if you're running two of your "readymade" 0.5Ω coils in parallel... for a net resistance of 0.25Ω and drawing over 70 watts.

What's the coil configuration on your patriot? Single, dual, ohms, etc?

Edit to add: and what are you having problems with exactly? The wicking on the Patriot or the turbo? State said what was wrong with the turbo, but are you asking about the patriot?

I'm not a fan of cotton... at all. But if you're open to different wicking materials, maybe you should try rayon.
I've been using the Cellucotton from Sally's:

Box #s: 44060 (500 ft), 44043 (3 lbs = 900 ft), 44040 (1200 ft), 44130 (40 ft).
Trust me... it is SOOOOOo worth giving it a shot!! And check out the Rayon thread for all the tips and tricks on how to use it... it is not like cotton (you need more of it.. tighter inside the coil)

Try not to roll it up real tight and the less handling the better, I also use Ko Gen and have found this to be the case. I get a little cotton taste the first couple drags , then it clears uo. If I roll it up really tight and manipulate it a lot, it takes half a tank for cotton taste to clear. Hope this helps, passin on the info I learned here.

Get a mod with temperature control, haha.

On a serious note, try to keep the cotton as loose as you can. Also try grabbing some Drago Egyptian cotton...you'll rarely ever get a dry hit

Organic cotton usually has a break-in period. That taste should go away after a few pulls (about ten or so). You could try rayon instead if the cotton taste is too much.

I roll one end of the cotton strip to a point to get it in the coil, just enough so it's snug, trim it how you like it, vape!
