I've been vaping for years now am I'm certainly not new to RBAs, however I have yet to find one that I really like or that performs as well some of the bottom coil tanks I use on a regular basis (the nautilus being my primary and favorite, currently). I got a genesis style RBA (believe it was the Smoktech RSST) a couple years ago and hated it; regardless of the material I used for a wick - SS mesh, silica, cotton - it would never wick as well or as quickly as I needed it to, and I'd always get a burnt flavor from it. I tried a couple other RBAs but ran into similar issues. Then I heard about the Kayfun, which wicked from the bottom, and I thought my prayers had been answered so I finally got one a little while ago. Unfortunately after several builds I still can't seem to get it working quite right. Again I'm having problems with wicking and find that I'm after a few puffs I get burnt flavor. I prefer to use cotton, but I've also tried silica and it doesn't seem to matter. I've watched countless build videos to see if I'm doing something wrong but I still can't figure out what the problem is. I think RBAs just hate me. Is there anyone else out there who's had similar issues and knows what I can do to fix it, or are RBAs just overhyped? It seems like everyone else out there loves the Kayfun/Russian 91%, I'm just not getting the same results. Any tips, suggestions or tricks of the trade would be much appreciated.

If you could post some closeup pics of your build and wick technique, that would help a lot.

My KFL was NOT love at first build. Nor the second, third or forth.
Wicking was the problem. So I opened up the juice channels with a dremel and diamond coated cylinder bit, the bit fit right into the channel and I just pushed down into the channel very carefully (deck side, the vertical side), I probably made it twice as deep. Wicking got allot better but it would still have problems if I was a huffing and puffing (I love the burn).

Then I found Rip Trippers double barrel build. Four wicks made allot more sense then two, and that was the ticket. Now I can still fry the juice, but keeping it wet is not an issue. Trips video can be found on You tube.

Best of luck,
R

Hi nettles =)

I followed the first build in this video...it came out perfect at 1.7 ohms. Then I built a second one for my son, same deal. Mine are Kayfun Lite +, not clones but I don't think that matters much, the decks and juice channels are the same, I believe.

I think the key is the wicking. I also use cotton. You don't need much at all. Too much cotton is a bad thing,,,,

LOL, apologies for Rip Tripper...He builds a nice coil but the cheese factor is high...mute if necessary.

Clipped the excess wire on this and closed her up....

So I have been hitting the daylights out of this for days and replaced the wick today. No dry hits, a bit of flooding at first but after the re-wicking today, no more flooding. I used even less cotton today.

Nettles,

When you are finished taking a puff, and release the button, do you hear a continued sizzle for a few seconds? If so, that's afterburn, a sign the wick is drying out towards the end of the puff and the kayfuns juice feed isn't working properly. With a well setup kayfun even at high power, a lot of wire mass, and a long hit the coil should go silent the second you release the button, as that means there is plenty of juice immediately at the coil to cool it down quick.

There are plenty of ways that people have setup kayfuns with results that satisfied them, but if you are having trouble I'd suggest to keep it as simple as possible and make absolutely sure the juice channels are completely exposed at the base of the build deck.

This is how SvoeMesto tells you to build the kayfun, with the coil at an angle. I do it exactly like this, except I don't have the wick long enough to actually lay down on the deck, just long enough to reach down and touch it. This because if you use cotton the part of the wick tail laying down on the deck can swell, blocking off the juice channels.

Image1.jpg

Once wicked and juiced, tuck the tails downward, they should be short enough to just barely touch the deck, not long enough to get bound up in the chimney threads. Then screw on the bottom half of the chimney. Now from above you can see where the tails will lay, nudge them into their corners if they moved while screwing the chimney on. You should be able to see the juice feed holes at the bottom of either side clearly without any cotton covering them. I usually drip some extra juice into the chamber before screwing the chimney cap on just to get it primed, then assemble and fill your kayfun.

If you follow this step by step it should work for you, this is how I do pretty much every Kayfun build and never had issues vaping from 0.5 ohm to 1.0 ohm. They key is allowing the juice to freely feed into the chamber, then freely get sucked back out when you stop inhaling, which also brings air back into the tank to equalize the pressure getting things ready for your next puff.

When the juice channels get blocked the chamber doesn't get "flooded" like it's supposed to, instead juice just slowly wicks from the channels directly into your wick. At lower power levels, with shorter puffs, or with thinner liquids there might not be an issue, but for people having problems it's something to check.

Tightening up the airflow control will also cause more juice to feed when you inhale, or you can just do a harder inhale as well.

I hope you get your kayfun working/wicking well!

Great tips, Chuck!

My KFL had been working well enough, but I've still had some wicking issues/things that aren't quite right. It's great to know about the afterburn, I've never heard of that, but I've got it. I'll also be trying shorter tails (in the pictures, everyone's look so long...)

No hijack intended, but those were two seriously great pieces of advice I'll be trying when I refill tomorrow. Just wanted to say thanks! Hopefully this will fix the OP's issues, and mine as well.

Post a pic and let us know how it went! Cotton should be trimmed off to be same length as the diameter of the Kayfun, no longer. At least in my case that's what worked. I had it puffy but not bulbous...:vapor:
