Hello everyone, I'm new to vaping so pardon my ignorance. I started vaping with the ego's and I enjoy using them but a few weeks ago i was charging a battery and i noticed the lights were off so i checked it and the charger was hot it had started to melt. This worried me so i started looking into mechanical mods foolishly thinking they were safer. I ended up buying a kts mechanical mod, two 18650 IMR 3.7V li-mn efest 2000 mah batteries and a trustfire 3.6V/3.0v charger. When i received the mod and batteries i tried them out using a rebuildable phoenix atomizer prebuilt coil. It fired up about six times then stopped. My 2 cent protection fuse apperently blew. I thought it had malfunctioned so i began vaping without it and again i got maybe 6 hits before it stopped, i then thought maybe the batteries needed to be charged so i charged them for a while until the light was green on the charger. I vaped with it today and got 10 good hits before it stopped. I then switched batteries and tried again with no luck i checked the second battery and the top was pretty hot. Is there a short in my mod ? I should add the phoenix atomizer is working fine on my ego. I'm planning on getting a volt tester soon. I really would like to keep using the kts mod but don't know where i should go from here. Any advice would be appreciated.

John, the text I bolded is where I think you are not being safe. Any time a battery you vape gets hot, that's bad. If anything else gets quite hot, that's bad too. Mechanical mods and RBA's are generally listed at vendors as being advanced vaping gear. They say that mainly because of the added safety factors we need to be aware of using this stuff.

So, any time any vape gear you use gets hot, stop using it and ask someone if it's OK. Definitely do not circumvent protection systems without knowing exactly what you are doing. I would park the phoenix atomizer and the KTS mod until I had more experience with vaping. Get the eGo systen worked out with the supplier and find something like Vivi Nova's or Kanger T2's (ot T3's) or Pro Tanks or cartomizer tanks to use in the meantime.

Best of luck with it all!

And almost forgot: Welcome to ECF! There is a wealth of information on here. Pull up a chair and dig in.

Nartnailuj, No I have not tried to sand down the connections I don't know how I would do that, would I take a very fine sand paper and sant the spring and inside positive connection? Would that include the threads? Would this help prevent shorts? I'm going to have to try that short stop looks like an awesome product, thanks!

Ryedan, interesting I didn't know there was a short protection built into the ego. Now when you say stop using the kts do you mean throw it away? Or should I stop using it because I don't know enough about electronics to use it safely? Could I keep using it if I get a short stop?

Get your five posts in as a new member, wait one hour, then see the KTS mod thread(s) in the APV section of the forums. There are improvements that can be done to it. That does NOT mean your Phoenix atomizer is OK though. I'd sure like to know what it says on an ohm meter or a VV device that can tell you that... both before a few puffs and after.

No, don't throw it away! Just stop using it until you know how to be safe with it. There is no electronics in it. That's part of the problem and also why people love them ... there are no electronics to get in the way of a very powerful vape. That can also make a very powerful (and painful) mistake if you don't take the proper precautions.

Part of this is also knowing how to be safe with the phoenix atomizer. Any RBA means you will be making the wick and coil by hand. That means they can short, the body of the RBA can short and you need to know how to handle that. Working with a mechanical mod and a RBA is the vaping version of buying land and building your own house on it. It can be very rewarding and you can save a pile of money, but you can also go broke and break a few bones if you didn't figure things out right form the start.

I suggest you start with a eGo system, or some such. Learn more about where you want to take your vaping and move on from there. If it's RBA's and mechs, so be it, but prefereably when you feel more sure of yourself with them.

- Oktyarb, Ill do that and I'm going to order a multimeter soon so I can test that phoenix out. I bet you guys are right about that being the problem, now that I think about it it did look like the sides of the coil were touching the sides of the post where they shouldn't have been, I assumed it was fine because it kept firing up in the ego.

-Ryedan I love that analogy, it makes a lot of sense.

-Ipwn I will try another atomizer once I recieve my short protection circuit. I paid 10$ for the 2¢ for safety, that can only be used once, I wish they would push the shortstop rather than the 2¢ for safety circuit.

The KTS is a fine piece of eqpt. But, like any Mech.Mod has no protection besides the multiple vent holes. Knowing what I'm doing AND using the correct batteries and tanks atop makes it vapilicious to the bone. I love mine.

Until I'm confident I'd not go into RBAs with it (or any mech for that matter). Just a $6 carto-tank like THIS makes it both look good and vape satisfactorily... prolly more than that - pleasurable I'd quip!

It's etched "QORAX Canada" with a Ser. No. @ a cost nearly the same as the Mod itself, LOL!

HI Qorax! That's hilarious. Bet the engraver loves you...& maybe a friend of yours? IN any case, your KTS looks gorgeous. Kudos to your for some impressive Style Points! NO surprise for someone who says stuff like :I'd quip"...lol :p

At the same time, I'd like to give you a warm Ontarion greeting, you of Brampton & moi of Toronto (tho a native Quebecer, lived here since '84 incl. Guelph for a decade+).

A few questions: How long into vaping were you before you got into using a mechanical & RBA's?
and secondly; can you tell me the proper way of using the KTS with a kick or point me in the right direction for the best tutorial/advice/video...whatever works...?

Been at it myself for 5 months. And it's a joy becoming a member of such a class act vaping community.

Cheers & Safe Vaping Everyone!

Hi,

Yep, she loves me immensely - given the business I'm repeatedly doling out to her. Everytime I receive something - I rush to her to get it engraved/etched. All my mods r.

A big Ontarian hug coming ur way too my bro!

I'm pretty new to vaping, commenced much later than u, just this March. Started with eRolls (love them, they r still my out-n-about gear, especially when I'm into formal circumstances), within 2-weeks fetched my Mech.Mod - the Sigelei #8 (Oh, what a built it is!) and then the hoarding continued.

I'm not yet Kicked! Personally, don't want to - b'coz IMHO any circuitry inside my mechie would defeat it's purpose - of raw power output. Especially with a sub-ohm RBA atop. But that's me. The KTS, being telescopic, has enough space to take a 'Kick' with any bat, even an 18350. Though 18500 & above 'Kicked' is prevalent for a reason.

And yes, it has been a privilege being part of the ECF!
