tobaccoHARM REDUCTION: Alex Norcia interviews Dr. Matthew Johnson, a professor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins, about why nicotine "has long been relegated to the outskirts of harm reduction."
VAPING RESEARCH: Contrary to the unsubstantiated claims made by anti-vaping public health groups, a study of nearly 70,000 people by the Mayo Clinic has found that vaping does NOT appear to increase susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection.
SPRINGDALE, ARKANSAS: (HEADS UP!) Without any scientific evidence to justify it, city is considering banning vaping and use of smoke-free tobacco (will they do mouth checks??) OUTDOORS in parks/on trails with up to a $500 fine. VOTING TOMORROW, Aug. 24th!
MEDIA MISINFORMATION: Article wonders about link between ADHD and smoking/nicotine use, tells readers youth start to smoke "for fun" or peer pressure. We suggest watching the video at the end, which correctly discusses nicotine and ADHD "self-medicating."
VAPING RESEARCH: Study finds combustion-free vaping and heat-not-burn products "are unlikely to have adverse effects on [lung cilia] function, and add to the evidence that these products do not appear to pose a significant respiratory health hazard."
WAR ON VAPING FAIL: Gallup poll finds disturbing trend for public health. Past week vaping by young adults is down from 19% (2019) to 17% with no change in smoking rate. The worse news is that vaping is down & smoking is up for older adults ages 30-64.
EXPOSING ANTI-VAPING RESEARCH BIAS: Authors admit the claim is "safer" for people who smoke, yet focus on results showing "not 100% safe" for non-smokers. Unbiased researchers would also wonder if switching to vaping reduces the cellular oxidative stress.
THE (IM)MORAL CRUSADE AGAINST SCIENCE: The "latest example of federal and state officials and anti-vaping special interest groups attempting to pressure the [FDA] to disregard the scientific review of tobacco products required by the Tobacco Control Act."
POLICY CONSEQUENCES: Ocean City mayor, police chief and city council skip meeting about police reform after violence against vaping teens. Reform is essential, but lawmakers must also question the policies themselves, and their inevitable consequences.
IN THE NEWS: FDA rejects another 55k PMTAs, this time saying benefits shown didn't overcome "risk posed to youth" from flavors. However, those "risks" have never been scientifically proven & FDA seems to ignore benefits of vaping replacing youth smoking.
CASAA IN THE NEWS: “We’ve already seen how harmful flavor bans are for people who vape by pressuring them back to smoking or buying products from informal sources,” said CASAA's Alex Clark, on states considering flavor bans on all low risk tobacco.
HEADS UP-NEWS-UPDATES: TC experts speak out in favor of vaping. FDA bans 55,000 vape products. John Hopkins professor on nicotine. Studies find vaping favorable. Poll finds vaping down/smoking up. Anti-vaping groups pressure FDA to ignore law and more!

OPINION: “So it stands to reason that if you eliminate the deadly tar and other toxic ingredients you could literally save millions of lives. But instead, by focusing on vaping’s impact on kids, we besmirch a lifesaving tool while preserving the popularity of cigarettes which will only kill those kids later when they take up smoking because they weren’t allowed to vape” - Greg Gutfeld
“Talking about vaping I get really, really animated because think about how divided we are as a country. Republicans, Democrats didn’t agree on anything. It’s impossible to have a real bipartisan consensus, EXCEPT for the fact that I should never be allowed to have a mango JUUL pod which was one of the major sources of joy in my life that I will never know again.” - Kat Timpf
POLICY RESEARCH: Economics and health policy researchers find that taxing all nicotine products at the same rate--as in bills introduced by Senator Dick Durbin and Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi--would cause increased smoking and would damage rather than improve public health.
RESEARCH: A new collaborative study by the University of Bristol (UK) and the University of Pennsylvania (US) found that adults who smoked were deterred from switching to vaping when exposed to tweets falsely implying vaping is more harmful than smoking.
RESEARCH: A confusing University of Michigan menthol ban study press release claims smoking & VAPING DEATHS will decline 15% (we don't know how the so-called "vaping deaths" were estimated by the researchers, considering the oft-cited "lack of long-term evidence" on vaping by anti-vaping groups, plus the study details are locked behind a paywall,) but then the study also relies on people SWITCHING TO vaping? So many questions....
OPINION: The FDA Is Set To Unintentionally Push Quitters Back to Smoking. Instead of trusting the science, the FDA will treat adults like children.
"One more thing here is how the idea of nicotine users as people with rights and agency has been erased in American culture. An unaccountable federal agency is banning products used by 10 million adults and virtually no one in media finds this noteworthy." - Jacob Grier
CASAA IN ACTION: CASAA can't predict the future, but we have created a FAQs page to address some of the questions, rumors and misinformation circulating about the recent FDA rejection of thousands of vapor product PMTAs. Click the link to read more!
